UC Santa Cruz Transfer Decisions 2013

Wow. 12 days till Berkeley decisions come out…I didn’t realize how close it was! Only six more days till Davis…wish I would hear back from Santa Cruz soon!

Apparently a couple of my classes didn’t transfer and I’m 6 units short. Son of a! Does anyone have experience with the appeals process? I’m thinking of signing up for spring classes (De Anza is still accepting until 4/19) and appealing saying that I will have the units needed by the end of Spring deadline. I’ve heard that it’s rare that they will reverse a decision, but is it worth giving it a shot?

@novalord2 It is a gorgeous place indeed. You know what struck a chord with me when I went, almost as much as the landscape and architecture? It was the people. Three separate incidents during my time walking around, when I had stopped or something for a little 360 gaze of the area, I was approached by a student on his/her way to/from class asking me if I needed help finding anything - and not in a condescending way at all. I got the feeling that every one of them would have taken the time to talk to me and show me around if I asked. These people actually cared, and it was refreshing.

@HokumPeddler

I definitely noticed that. The people in the town (and surrounding areas, Gilroy etc.) were the same way.

Also, if anyone is thinking about going there…you should check out the UCSC subreddit, I got a lot of fantastic tips on places to eat, see, etc. And campus info.

rejected… wierd… lol whatever i got into ucsd and ucsb for psychology… i was missing 2 pre-reqs and have a 3.5 gpa a 3.8 uc gpa… lol

^ IKR!!! I’m appealing for sure. I’m not gonna let this go since I see many 3.0 GPAs got in.

@av4081
I’m not sure how late you mean, but I applied at 12:00 AM on December 1st and was notified a week ago of my acceptance.

I really cut it close. I decided to apply that day because I wasn’t sure if I could get in.

I just spoke with an Admin Rep. They said the major “ding” against me was my math requirement. I explained that my only math requirement is IN PROGRESS and that it is 4 units.

I am a history major and completely perplexed. To be persistent, I think I am going to appeal. It doesn’t hurt I suppose.

Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance.

Hi does anyone know if you can change your major after declaring a certain major? I am a transfer student.

And are you required to declare a major once you get there I mean like right away? I read its suppose to be at the end of the 2nd quarter system of your junior year.

Pup during your second or after your 2nd quarter

@Kingdom
Very cool advice, I was up there last weekend and was in the bookstore the day you posted that so maybe we saw each other haha. Did you live in Porter? That is the only part of the school I am not completely happy about.

@Hokum
I agree, on the way up I met a current student on the 17 bus and he was really cool and he was going to help me find my friend’s (who I was visiting) room and all that buy my friend ended up meeting me downtown he was super cool though. Also I noticed that the cars actually stopped for pedestrians!? What the hell! haha awesome.

Emailed admissions asking for insight on when to expect a decision and this was their response, word for word, the entire email:

“We are still working on transfer files.
Look for a change in the status page of the portal soon, before the end of the month.”

Not very helpful, but there ya go

So it’s been a month now since they original date transfers were to be notified.

@eacole “before the end of the month”!?!

UC Irvine - Chemistry
UCSB - Chemistry
UC Santa Cruz - Bioengineering
UCSD - Chemical Engineering

If anyone was confused as I was about how they admit ppl to specific majors, then this info is for u. This is coming straight out of their acceptance letter, so it’s gotta be right - if u applied as art, bio sciences, psych, any engineering and any econ major and if u got accepted, you’re already screened for that major and you r good to go, should u submit your sir. All other majors gotta look into their major specific requirements and see if they qualify. If not…uh oh. Time for that plan B. Just because u r admitted to the school doesn’t mean u r accepted to your major. Worst case scenario is ull end up in sc and ull b without a major, after all the trouble u go through to attend the school…

Rejected

•UC GPA: 3.42
•Major Pre-reqs YES - all completed PLUS 2 additional - including 2 con-current enrollment classes at UC Berkeley where I earned an A for Fall 2012 and as mid-term this semester have a B
•Intended Major: history
•TAG?: No
•IGETC?: Yes - all of it! (2 courses ‘In Progress’ this semester - Math and Anthro 1)
•Cum GPA:3.31.

Subjective:
•Extracurriculars - I volunteer at annual community events and have previously served on the executive board of political advocacy organization

•Job/Work Experience: Quit “Corporate-America” to go to school full-time but had to return to work a year later to support self - work 30 + hrs per week.

•Personal Statement: Was told by multiple people (including Cal Alum) that I “hit it out of the park” and my English 1C professor said mine “nailed it”.

Other
•Ethnicity: White
•Gender: Male
•Income Bracket: <$18,000
•Hooks - extremely non-traditional student, prestigious internship while in high school and extensive work experience

Reflection
•Strengths: GPA Upward Trend, 2 Honors courses,
•Weaknesses: GPA (2 W’s for non-transferable math class)
•Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: According to rejection from Santa Cruz, they said I won’t meet “junior level” transfer requirements. Santa Barbara doesn’t disclose why on the “Not Admitted” page.

After checking and re-checking, I will have 67 units at the conclusion of Spring 2013.

^ Consider calling or appealing. I’m really surprised. I don’t see any reason for you to get rejected. Having 2 Ws is perfectly fine, that can’t be it.

Edit: Hold on, is your first transferable math course in progress? That could be it.

Guys i’m freaking out, i’ve been doing terribly in an online class and in my city college and I already accepted admission to UCSC.

I have an F and i don’t think I can get it up to a C. Does this go against my TAG and admission agreement? Will they not take me now?

I can’t drop it cause i’m at 8 units and that class is 3 units and then fafsa will drop me and I can’t pay out of pocket for UCSC.

Help

@h14hopefull: appeal appeal appeal. You sound like an excellent student and something so minute should not stop your admissions ( at least in my mind). Also the other uc’s seem to be accepting more transferable classes than sc so hopefully that will work in your favor. I’m really sorry and surprised.

@ilymary: BEG your teacher. Do whatever you can to not get below a c. Sc seems pretty ruthless about the last semester’s grades

Accepted :).
Major: Marine biology
GPA: around 3.06 cumulative… terrible freshman year, (2.7) but upward trend since last summer (4.0) and last semester (3.6).
current school: University of Hawaii Manoa.
IGETC: Pretty much all done. physics, biology, chemistry, and math done. I’m even taking all 4 semesters of calculus for ****s and giggles :p.
EC: Lab intern on Kane’ohe, Oahu. Working with a couple grad students researching hammerhead sharks at Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology. It’s pretty fun. I go swimming and snorkeling with them a lot too. Still haven’t been diving certified yet though.

comments:
I am extremely grateful that I got in. I was expecting an avalanche of thin rejection envelopes. The personal statement is what probably got me in. I was sincere. I’m still torn between going back to California or staying in Hawaii though. The more I get ready to leave, the more I realize how much I would miss this island.

To the people in the previous posts, appeal! Without being too aggressive, (humbly) tell them that they need you.
