UC Santa Cruz Waitlist Thread 2018

Hi all. I apologize if a thread has been started but I’ve looked and I don’t see one. My son is one of those who has been waitlisted. So let’s get this thread going.
His academics due to some issues he has had all of his life, are far from the strongest of candidates but I do believe his powerful essays explaining his academics is what got him at least waitlisted, instead of flat out denied. We live in Southern California. And again due to issues that he has had to contend with all his life, his GPA I believe is a 3.3 and I will just tell you that all three times he took the ACT, he got the same score which is below a 24 ( I just will not say how below.) He was accepted to Merced but that is not a good fit for him, denied from Santa Barbara which we expected, and as of today March 22 is still waiting to hear from UCR. His desire is to go to school on the East Coast and fortunately he was admitted into a few smaller universities there. However a few of the UC campuses he would have considered if he had gotten in. Good luck to you all!

Hi, my son applied to 8 UC’s for gratuate program in computer science/ engineering/robotics and he got rejected in 6 … we are super depressed and dejected… he is waitlisted in UCSC and waiting to hear from UCI and cal poly Pamona… any suggestions on whether there is a possibility to get in to UCSC if waitlisted?? This is our final hope …Posted this in another thread too… He got into one of the Cal state but we are debating if he doesn’t get into any UC’s should he go to Commuinity college/ Cal state

@IamfromLA I’m sorry to let you know because I guess you have not yet gone on the Santa Cruz website under waitlisted students, that it says right on it that first of all they will not be letting students know whether they were admitted or denied from the waitlist until around June 1. It also says on that website that if he has or she has been whatever student has been accepted at another university that they should accept that offer. Because getting admitted from the waitlist is not guaranteed in anyway. It depends on how many students decline their offer during their regular admission. Every time a student declines, that opens up another spot for those of our kids who are waiting on the waitlist. Universities know that often times students are on the waitlist for other schools. Should your son or should my son be taken off of the waitlist, then we will let which ever school he commits to know about it if it in fact UCSC his first choice. You can go on their website google UC Santa Cruz and then also put in the words “common data statistics” and it shows you how many people in previous years they have admitted from the waitlist. It’s not a lot.
Also although not nearly as almost unattainable LOL as Cal poly San Luis Obispo, Cal poly Pomona is still significantly harder than other Cal states to get into. My son applied to five UC campuses with only three of them being possible chances though definitely still reachra. He got into Merced which he in no way will go to as it is in no way a good fit for him. He was waitlisted from Santa Cruz. He still has not heard from Riverside. In that order those are the easiest ones that he had a chance to get into. He was denied flat out which we knew he would be from Santa Barbara, and only because he had been a high-level gymnast for 11 years, he for whatever reason decided to also submit to Berkeley which we laughed as he did it because no way in 1 million years could he ever get in there. For him, and his academics that would be the same as if he applied to Harvard. So out of the UC’s the only one we are waiting to hear from which we will find out next week is Riverside. Those notifications were released starting March 1 and have been on rolling admissions ever since.

There was a major mixup with the new computer system throughout the Cal states and as a result numerous students were denied to many of the CSU campuses because their test scores were not received in time. Those schools then were advising students to appeal because they knew what happened. My son has no desire to attend any of the 7 Cal states he applied to. The only one he had an inkling of interest with was San Francisco State that he actually was accepted into… But for personal reasons it has been advised to us by numerous people that we are associated with that it would not be a good university for him to attend.
Fortunately his main desire has always been to go to school on the East Coast. He was denied from his number one choice, and was admitted to two others one that he has fallen in love with after visiting it for two days and one he has not yet seen University of New Hampshire but we are to be seeing it next month. Good luck to your son. I don’t know what advice I can give you.

Denied: UCD, UCSB

Waiting to hear from SDSU, UCR, and UCI

@Andreq thank you for the write up. We do periodically check the UC Santa Cruz website. My son believe that if he still doesn’t get into the last 3 choices he has got, CC is the better choice for him to transfer to UC in ~2 yrs. He did not apply to UC Davis, Riverside or Merced and he limited himself to California and applied to the much impacted major Computer Engg/Science/Robotics. We have no choice now but to have the CC option. Thanks again.

@IamfromLA I didn’t choose CC after being waitlisted at UCSC (my dream) and I really wish I did. CC is awesome and UCSC participates in the transfer admission guarantee (TAG) program so with good grades he’ll for sure get in! But for me and everyone else I know, CC is a really positive experience (I left a CSU after 2 years to go to CC to transfer to UC)

That part about the Cal schools is interesting…

did anyone appeal their waitlist?

I appealed from the waitlist. I had a letter of rec, a transcript, and my statement. I got a 4.5 this first semester which is up from last year’s 3.7 so hopefully they appreciate the upward trend!

Stats
GPA: 3.4
ACT: 31
Major: Politics
Plenty of EC’s, leadership, good essays

Hello Gumby Mom. Do you think there is any chance appealing/writing loci will help my chances of getting in off the waitlist? I noticed that the Appeal deadline was March 31 :(. Could I still send In a Loci or do you think my only option is just waiting? UCSC is my dream school and I want to convince them that I still have an unwavering interest in attending,

@HelloThere12321 Appealing would have been the big thing you send to let them know why they should take you off the waitlist. Right now all you really can do is wait and hope for the best.

@HelloThere12321: According to the common dataset, an applicants level of interest is not considered so an LOCI would not help your chances. If you opted into the waitlist, that is all you can do at this point.

Last year waitlist acceptances started coming out around April 20th. Does that seem likely/plausible for this year? Pointless question I guess but the answer does feel pleasing lol

DD is on the wait list and submitted an appeal, just a letter describing the challenges she faced changing high schools and how she made mistakes in her studies and how she corrected them. Her senior year 1st semester grades are 4.0 weighted compared to 3.7 weighted. If an appeal is to introduce new and compelling information occurring at or before the applications were submitted, do senior year grades impact their decisions? I have read prior posts that the new grades may have helped.

Son and I visited the campus yesterday and we were really impressed! He’d probably love to go here if he were taken off the wait list.
GPA 3.6, SAT 1340/1380, ACT 28
Rejected: UC Davis
Accepted: Cal Poly SLO, Cal Poly Pomona, Seattle University, University of Puget Sound.

On waitlist. Noticed last year people were accepted from waitlist before the overall UC SIR deadline. Makes me wonder…when other people submit an SIR to another school do the other UC schools know there is one less potential student? For ex., does the UCSC’s admitted student list automatically readjust? If not, how could UCSC admit more people before SIR deadline?

@Gmt7080: I am sure some students have already SIR’d to other schools so hopefully the polite and right thing to do is let UCSC know they will not be attending, but if they do not decline, then UCSC has to wait until May 1. If enough students decline their admission before the May 1 SIR deadline, then they can start admitting students off the waitlist. This is been a tough year with UC admissions, so many students may be waiting to the last minute to decide so for all practical purposes, after May 1 to hear waitlist decisions is more reasonable.
