UC Santa Cruz Waitlist Thread 2018

@hibis: Being waitlisted by that many UC’s does not increase her chances. Everything will be dependent upon how many students SIR by May 1 and how many spots will be available. Always hope for the best but have a backup plan. So no CSU’s in the picture?

@vinashana she applied as a biology major. Not looking good because biology is very impacted. Still hoping though.

My son also applied as a biology major. We sent in the SIR to Seattle U, which is also a fabulous school, and have no problem attending there. But he would like to get off the waitlist at Santa Cruz. He also got into Cal Poly SLO, but it just wasn’t his vibe.

Anyone know how impacted Game Design is at ucsc?

@Gumbymom I applied undeclared for my major and alternate do you think in general I will have a higher chance getting im

So ucsc already get enough people, and its very likely they don’t take anyone from the waitlisted?

@Hellothere12321: UCSC does not admit by major with the exception of the Engineering school so going in as Undecided will not give you an advantage. All any one can do is wait and see. Hopefully they will have plenty of spots available after May 1.

what do u mean by “by major” im a CS waitlistee atm

@hisbis I think you DD will have good chance if she has strong stats and applied non-impact major. Regarding UCM, my coworker’ DD attends there and he was pleasantly surprised how much professors cared about their students. He said his DD doesn’t want to attend there and was pretty upset, until couple weeks into the study, she totally loved there. Not to mention “new”and “clean”facilities and dorm, but because there is no rank established yet, all professors are focused on bringing up the reputation by making sure they offer focus and care for every students.
His DD got a lot of attention from professors, research opportunities, recommendation for internships, she was planning to transfer after the first year then she changed her mind and stayed. Because she can get strong recommendations for graduate school. UCM’s goal is to surpass UCR and UCSC. It’s still a UC system, it’s just newest campus. I heard UCI, UCSC, and UCR were in the same situation years back without much reputation, but now all UCs are top 100 schools in the US. Hope you feel better about UCM now.

@jackattac825: What I mean is that UCSC admits into the University first then into your proposed major. For CS which is impacted and highly selective, you are still required to be admitted into your “proposed CS major” and then complete some screening courses before declaring the CS major. Being on the waitlist does not guarantee that if admitted you will be in the “proposed CS major”.

Declaration of the Computer Science Majors

In order to be admitted into the computer science major students must be listed as a proposed major within the School of Engineering. Students must be listed as a proposed major within the School of Engineering before they can declare. Please refer to the “Declaration of Major” section in the School of Engineering Program Statement for more information.

Admission to the computer science majors is selective. In addition to being listed as a proposed major within the School of Engineering, students must satisfy the following three criteria: (i) students must declare CS (Computer Science B.S. or Computer Science B.A.) as their major between student’s second to sixth quarter, (ii) students have to complete all the foundation courses listed below when they declare their major, and (iii) students must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.80 in the foundation courses attempted at UCSC, with at most one unsuccessful attempt (grade C-, D+, D, D-, F, or NP) permitted in a foundation course. Denials of admission to the major may be appealed by submitting a letter to the School of Engineering Undergraduate Office, addressed to the Computer Science Undergraduate Director, describing why the prior performance is not an accurate reflection of the student’s potential. Students who are informed that they are not eligible to declare the major may appeal this decision by submitting a letter to the department chair within 15 days from the date the notification was mailed. Within 15 days of receipt of the appeal, the department will notify the student, college, and Office of the Registrar of the decision.

Foundation Courses

The foundation courses for all computer science majors are as follows:

CMPS 12A/L (or Computer Engineering 13, or both CMPS 5J and CMPS 11) and 12B/M; Computer Engineering 16; and Mathematics 19A and 19B, or 20A and 20B. CMPS 13H/L may be used instead of both CMPS 12A/L and 12B/M.

Hey @Gumbymom

Is CS the only major in the college of engineering at ucsc where they admit by major? Or is it for any engineering major at the college of engineering?

because I am waitlisted for game design, which is less impacted than CS, but still an engineering major

@vinashana: You have to be admitted from the waitlist for your Proposed Major Game Design which is in the Baskin School of Engineering or you can change to the Proposed major by taking the screen courses. Either way, you still need to take specific course requirements to declare the major and should check with an academic advisor to plan out your schedule.

BSOE Proposed Major Status Policy

As of students entering in Fall 2018, all first-time freshmen must become proposed majors before being allowed to declare a major in the Baskin School of Engineering.

In addition to being a proposed major, students must meet the Major Qualification Requirements for their intended major prior to being able to declare.

All students must declare a major by the major declaration deadline in their 6th quarter.

Please note that not all of the courses from the proposed major policy list (at the bottom of this page) are required for every School of Engineering major. Refer to your intended major’s requirements for more information.

If you are interested in having your proposed major changed to a BSOE major, please submit your request on our Change of Proposed Major form.

In order to be eligible to declare a School of Engineering major, students must be listed as a proposed major in one of the following:

Bioengineering
Bioinformatics
Computer Engineering
Computer Science: Computer Game Design
Computer Science (B.A. or B.S.)
Electrical Engineering
Robotics

Students in their fourth quarter or beyond who would like to become a proposed major, or students who are proposed and would like to retain their proposed status, must have passed Math 19A or 20A, and two additional BSOE classes from the following list within their first three quarters:
CHEM 1A, CMPE 12, CMPE 13, CMPE 16, CMPS 11, CMPS 12A, CMPS 12B, MATH 19B, MATH 20B, PHYS 5A, OR PHYS 5C
Students who are in an Engineering proposed major and who do not meet these criteria will be removed from their proposed major. Students who want to change to an Engineering proposed major must also meet these criteria.

anyone hear anything?

Not a word

Still hoping for the best.

Good luck.

I’ve been speaking to someone at UCSC, and he said they’re not even sure they’re going to the WaitList this year.

On a person note: we know TONS of kids who didn’t get into the UC they wanted, and used UCSC as a safety school. And these kids, who normal would pass on UCSC are now attending - hence less chance of getting off the waitlist.

If you got into a school and can afford it, I suggest you go for it, or else plan on CC like my kid.

FYI - from the UCSC site:

Q: If I am on the waitlist for UCSC, what are my chances of being admitted?

A: That’s impossible to predict, since it depends on how many admitted students accept UCSC’s offer, and how many students opt in for the UCSC waitlist. Applicants will not know their standing on the waitlist. The Office of Admissions won’t know until the beginning of June how many applicants – if any – will be admitted off the waitlist.

Q: How will I find out if I get an offer of admission?

A: We will send you an email and you will also see your status on the portal change. You will be required to accept or decline the offer of admission through the portal within a week of your acceptance.

@SADMBDAD may I ask who you talked to? I’ve tried calling admissions office before but they only talk to admitted students.

@SADMBDAD I heard the same thing when I talked to admissions in person when I went for a visit
The admissions officer, said there were people who had already SIR who usually would go to a higher up UC like UCLA
She said it really didn’t look good and they do not even know if they will take anyone from the waitlist

Spoke with a gentlemen in the admission department, via email.
