UC Santa Cruz - Why no love?

i'll be in SC april 18 - 20, any orientations happening then?

I think the spring spotlight tour period is from 4/5 - 4/19, so probably.

Just got my acceptance letter in the mail today. Pretty impressive compared to UCI's.

I just got that big acceptance package from ucsc today too. I going to try to go up to that tour in the spring up there.

I got into UC Davis and UCSC for an environmental studies major. Does anyone have a suggestion as to which one I should go to? I was leaning towards Davis, but not too sure anymore.

lol....nice analogy Alan.

Many CCC applicants probably could have attended UCSC, but chose not to, so they're aiming higher for transfer admissions.

3hotsandacot, both schools have really good programs, and both are good schools, so you have to look at WHERE you want to live. have you seen any of the campuses?

Having taken upper division courses in eight departments at the college, I can say with complete confidence that the UCSC Literature department is one of the strongest in the school. I believe it is also ranked number 3 in the nation. In terms of third world literature its PhD program ranked fourth in the nation and it has been known to be referenced by authors of the subject throughout the world. The department is a little known gem to common applicants.

The Linguistics is also ranked in the top five, though Im not sure on the exact ranking.

Three departments at UCSC that are perhaps the best kept secrets (to undergrads) in the UC:

Literature
Linguistics (unless youve researched, then this is readily apparent)
History of Consciousness (though this is a grad program, undergrads can take some courses with the profs)

Also excellent is the Psychology. Politics is suffering with the budget cuts, but there are some decent offerings.

As for the campus, it is an incredible campus to live on for a few years. But, as some have alluded to, you either love it or hate it. If you like the outdoors and action sports are an ocean lover, like scuba diving, surfing, etc., it is a dream campus. Plus it has SF and SJ within 30 mins and an hour.

One down side, with the budget cuts classes are incredibly impacted. This will likely get worse. But, it seems that is a problem across all UC’s these days.

Thanks OP for this thread. UCSC was my number one and the ONLY school I applied to. It’s the only UC (aside from Cal) that I fell in love with.

I’m not necessarily concerned with the fact that it’s a “lower UC”, I visited friends at the campus last fall (at the beginning of my freshman year) and it was my goal to get there ever since.

I’ll be a student there this Fall 2010. Sometimes it’s discouraging to read about people undermining UCSC, but I feel good because I had a goal and I completed it successfully.

Best of luck to everyone else who is off to bigger and better places! I’ll be in the forest licking banana slugs at UCSC :)

Way too many UCSC haters on this site. It is a smaller university than most other UCs but a great school nonetheless. And those who say it is easy to get into guess again. 29000 apply and 2000 get in. That is not an 80% acceptance rate like many are trying to imply.

Not sure where you are getting those numbers man,
if you look at their statistics page, they state themselves that they have a 57% admittance rate for transfers in general (http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/campuses/santa-cruz/transfer-profile/index.html</a>).

It’s not 80%, but Its most definitely not 2000/29000.
In any case, I’m sure UCSC is a fine school.
