UC Santa Cruz

I’ve posted a similar thread before but my life has changed since then.

I want to go to this school, it’s one of my reach schools. Problem is, I’m not sure I’ll get in. I’m a B student.
I wasn’t always a B student but my dad passed away exactly a year ago and my grades dropped but didn’t recover. My college consulter seems doubtful I’ll get into any UC outside of Riverside or Merced, but this is where I want to go.

GPA: 3.64
SAT: 2020
ACT: Havent taken it but I hope to get a 31 or 32 and that’s not unreasonable for me.

I’m a B student. I get Bs in AP classes and normal classes. I get As too, but in all honestly, I’m a B student.

Problem is, as a sophomore I took Calc AB. And from that class it went downhill. We’re on a trimester system by the way.

Sophomore Year Grades:
Calc AB Tri 1: A
Calc AB Tri 2: C
Calc A/B Seminar/precalc: C (seminar doesnt count in GPA)

And I STILL decided to move onto Calc BC cause im stupid.
Junior Year Grades:

Bridge to Calc B/C: D (doesnt go into GPA)
Calc BC Tri2: C
Calc B/C Tri3: This year hasnt ended yet but I have a high F right now but my teacher and I are both working to get it up to a D so that it does affect my GPA as much as a F would. Maybe I’ll even get a C but I doubt it…

By the end of this year I’ll probably have a 3.4 or 3.5 depending on my other classes…

I AM RETAKING THIS CLASS and if I’m correct, those grades should replace this years grades? I’m scared cause UCs only look at sophomore and junior year and by the time I apply I wont be able to show any improvement because the trimester won’t end in time.

If extra curriculars help at all, I’m president of my choir program at school, historian of Music Honor Society and I’ve done musical theater both outside and in school and have gotten a lot of lead roles. I sing in my advanced choir and have gone to Regional Chorus (SCVA) though i didn’t get to try for all state because of a prior commitment. I’m in an A Capella group and Glee club.

I do community service and am trying to get a small job this summer. I was told even traveling can go on my resume, and I have traveled to many places.

What are my chances at UC Santa Cruz? And if they’re small, can someone point me in the direction of some other schools so I can research them and see if they’re a fit for me? Thanks in advance for any help I can get.

Is that unweighted or UC GPA? I would say low reach. Also what is your intended major? Your GPA is quite low, but your SAT and EC’s are above average for the school.

@iamjack no, that’s why I’m freaking out. It’s my weighted. My unweighted so far is 3.45 and I don’t wanna think about what will happen after this trimester ends. And I’m not 100% sure yet but I might major in poly sci or business

I think UCSC is definitely worth an application. You have an above average SAT score and although your UC GPA is below the average, it is still above the 25th percentile. If you plan to go into Poly Sci vs. Engineering, then you should be ok. BTW, UCSC does not have a Business major persay but they have Business Management Econ.

Ok I guess I’ll just pray for the best

Right… I would say high match if you’re not going into engineering

bruhhh my gpa is like 3.3 and i got into ucsc this year. u got this!

when you applied, what was your major?

You have a solid shot but it could go either way. You should also apply elsewhere. UCR, SDSU, CSULB, Fullerton, Chico and Northridge all have solid biz programs and are well in your range.
Good luck.

Your counselor is insane! You are well qualified for UCSC and I think you’ll get in for sure.

http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/freshman-admissions-summary says that for 2015, frosh applicants with UC-weighted-capped GPA of 3.40-3.79 had a 47% admission rate to UCSC.
