Anyone else think this is the hottest school in the nation? I bet 10-15 years from now, it will be a top tier UC. I’m really regretting not applying there now that I know more about it… Especially because it looks like my chances of getting into Berkeley, UCLA, or UCSD are fading away.

there's no doubt both Santa Cruz and Davis will elevate in status over the years as the quality of their student bodies get better due to the trickle-down squeeze at Berkeley, UCLA, Santa Barbara and San Diego. and that's not to say they aren't excellent schools now. but hottest in the nation? only if you go to bed with surf wax.

You put Santa Barbara in the same group as Berkeley, LA, and SD?

Santa Barbara gets more credit than it deserves.

Santa Cruz is also doing much better. The biggest help to their reputation is that they dropped the evaluation-only grading system as of 97-98 (which was a big part of the reason they dropped down so far). They have a pretty good astrophysics department, they've just gotten a new Chancellor (though we won't talk about the controvery there), and there are a lot of caring people that are doing their best to encourage the students on campus to succeed (such as, for example, the very active recruiting for applicants for the Student Regent position).

Part of what's so great about UCSC, despite its current reputation, is the attention to the undergraduates. It's excellent, and once you get past the usual bureacratic mess you can find support for practically anything you want to do.

(Am I inclined to be biased? Um... yes? ^^; )

It's not there yet, but it's on its way. I think the biggest thing standing in its path now is its uber-liberalism (which is scary even to a centrist-leaning-left like me, and is worse than Berkeley according to a friend of mine who attends said school).

UC Davis > Irvine, SB, SD, Santa Cruz, SF, Cal Poly SLO, Riverside

It's the third best UC, in my opinion. Behind Berkeley and LA.

As for UCSC... VERY underrated.

"Anyone else think this is the hottest school in the nation? I bet 10-15 years from now, it will be a top tier UC."

Don't bet on it...too many druggy hippies lol

Amen, tore. Alas.

Too many surfers-types also lol

"Hey, man, it's the weekend! Let's go grab some munchies at Sabieng."

"OK, right after I finish this blunt, budday."

Sound familiar undecided? lol

StillRemains: I strongly disagree with your opinion that UC Davis is better than UC San Francisco. UC San Francisco arguably is the best UC - better than UC Berkeley and UCLA.

Davis is the number one UC on the rise.

It is turning into the largest uc population wise and probably land wise. In the next 5 yrs it will take UCSD over.

If you're a member of the Ski & Snowboard Club! :P

... The sad part is that I'm not kidding. The really sad part is that I've heard something eerily similar to that, except replace Sabieng with <insert name="" of="" club="" here=""> and change "right after I finish this blunt" to "sure, lemme roll a new one". Also note that this is any night of the week. Note also that this isn't limited to clubs. >_></insert>

... Somewhat of an exaggeration, but UCSC definitely deserves its notoriety as a drug campus.

Wallflowers: While I agree with your disagreement, I feel that's somewhat unfair to UCSF and UCD: UCSF caters to a very, very specific group of students, and UCD has both undergrads and grads in a wide range of concentrations.

Sabieng is a Thai place in Santa Cruz. I think college students like to go there...I may be wrong.

Sabieng is a Thai place. But there are a ton of other places to go, and I've never noticed that Sabieng is a frequent destination (though I may just be out of the loop). More often, people choose one of the many taquerias -- cheap eats, and it's pretty good.

Damn... I didn't apply to Davis cuz it's too far away. Well, in the terrible scenario that B, LA, and SD reject me, would you guys recommend I go to Santa Barbara or Irvine?

Depends on what you're going for, sinful_saint. They're both good colleges, but for different reasons.

I'm gonna be a poli sci major... Planning on going to law school. I'm not the huge party type but I don't want to be bored, I'm Indian... and... yea.

Indeed, Vallarta. Or Palomar Taco Bar lol

SinfulSaint. You didn't apply to Davis because it's too far... but you applied to Berkeley... they're not that far from each other.

I find Berkeley to be worth the distance. Besides, I doubt I'll be accepted with my 3.82 UC GPA.

Davis is no doubt a very good school, but i just feel it's very grad school oriented. That, coupled with the area, is the reason i decided on another school. Definitely some high quality students there, though, and one of the best science grad schools in the nation.
