Hello

I was wondering about classes that I have to take as a freshmen of UCLA
My major is biology.

What classes do I sign up for freshmen year?
Are there levels? If they have levels, is it better for me to take higher-leveled classes?
Do I take english, math, history classes just like I did in high school for first two yrs of college?
Or do I take classes based on my major?

And what classes are transferrable?
I really don't want to take english and math class in college.
Are those transferrable from community college?

Thank you for your time! :)

Summer sessions at community college don’t count for UC’s.

I know this cause I did alot of research, I’m planning to transfer to UCLA for my junior year, and they apparently don’t allow classes completed during the summer.

I would check for you though.

Absolutely incorrect. The UCs are extremely generous with transfer credit, as long as its IGETC (which means they are transferable, but each Cal juco usually flags the transferability of classes.). That being said, taking english at some community colleges is not much better than HS english. Take the writing at a UC and really learn how to write college papers. The UCs have distribution requirements, which you can AP out of, or fulfill at community college. The exact distribution requirements depends on your major – engineers have fewer, for example.

If you are a bio major, then you should evenutally take Calc. Several UCs have calc for life science majors and Calc for math majors and Calc for Math honors/engineers. Note, the premeds typically take Calc for life science majors, so the competition can be rough.

Deep: what you found was that taking a required course for (transfer) admissions is not allowed during the summer. But this is also true for those applying as a Frosh – all applicants must complete the required courses for admissions by June at the end of the year in which you applied, i.e…, you can’t take Alg II or VAPA in the summer after your senior year.

I know for UCI the “recommended” unit takes is 12-16 that’s 3 or 4 classes and u end up paying the same wheather you take 3 or 4 classes

so F that, Im taking 5

I know I cans kip writing 39A and go right to Writing 39B and get done that writing requirement faster.

I’m double majoring too so I need to be extremely careful with what I take

-Writing 39B-Writing 39C-Playwright class
-Drama 39A-B-C
-Drama 50A-B-C
-MT1
-Jazz1
-Technical Theater for 4 quarters

I’m also taking some sort of math and bio class for the winter, spring and summer.

Thank you guys! :)

Then what classes would be the most beneficial for me to take during summer (bio major)?

Can I take calculus class to transfer?

Go to the UCLA Biology website and they have a ton of info as to required classes. Do the research. You may want to contact a counselor at CC or UCLA to make sure if you take a CC course it will transfer equally to UCLA.
