How often or common do out of states students receive scholarships? And how much do they usually give? I'm trying to decide if I should apply to the UCs, but the price is kid of a problem. My basic stats are 4.0 unweighted gap and 2160 SAT.

Not to be a debbie downer. But even in state the UC scholarships are not good at all. With instate tuition at $12900 and room and board breaking $15000 on average. But there always is a tiny chance.

From my understanding most aid and scholarships are need based. There are some that aren’t but they are few and applied by tons upon tons of UC students in the exact same position.

My son is most likely going out of state or Calpoly. Our EFC is too high and no way we have $21k worth of extra income lying around per year.

Thanks for the advice. Are there other California schools with better scholarship options?

There are some schools in Calif that give scholarships, but how much do you need?

How much will your parents pay?

For instance, at a school that costs $55k+, would a $15k per year scholarship be enough? In such a case, the balance would be about $40k per year.

If the cost was $55,000, I think a scholarship that will cover half would be better. My parents didn’t tell me the limit, they don’t want that to keep me from applying. But as much scholarship as possible is preferred.

No chance at a merit scholarship from the big three UCs. (Test scores are too low.)

My S is interested in a couple of the UC schools, but simply won’t even apply knowing that aid will be next to nil. It’s unfortunate, but S has a number of other schools on his list and has no regret about UC.

Quick question though… UC is not part of WUE, right?

crazymomster, you mean the western university agreement thing? Where they charge instate tuition? From and article I read a while back, my understanding is no. But certain CA State universities are.

Yes I agree next to nil is out there beyond need based.

Panda I’d say with your score look at some other states that give automatic scholarships with your GPA and SAT score. You’d be surprised there are quite a few. We live in SF, just break six figures combined income. EFC is like $24k we don’t even have that extra left over after taxes and mortgage. Even with instate tuition we are looking out of state for merit aid. Our sons safety will most likely be Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

UC is definitely not a member/participant in WUE.

And even when a college is listed on the WUE site, you need to go to that college’s website and see how WUE is administered there. The WUE agreement may not be for all states, may depend on major, and while some are automatic if the student fulfills certain requirements, at other schools, they are given more like merit aid and very competitive.
