Hi guys! So I have a question about my ability to get into certain UC Schools. I AM LITERALLY HAVING A PANIC ATTACK AND I GET REALLY SCARED WHEN THINKING ABOUT MY CHANCES BECAUSE I DON’T THINK I AM GOOD ENOUGH. I am looking at:
-UCLA
-UCSD
-UCD
-UCI
My stats & background are this:
I am Hispanic (my mother is a Mexican immigrant), I come from an extremely low income family (around the $30,000’s), and I will be the first out of my family to attend a university.
My extra curriculars include:
-my town’s Youth Council for 3 years (positions of leadership in 2 of those years)
-National Honor Society President
-President of a major academic/leadership-type class at my school
-Girl Scouts (11 years)
-installing a paper recycling program at my school
-Church leader for 2 years
-lacrosse for my first two years of high school
-internship with a Congressman
-spoke at a presidential library for a major event
-others random acts of community service
My overall weighted grade is: 4.03 and my unweighted is about 3.75
I take honor/advanced classes including:
-Spanish 3 Honors
-Ap world
-AP US History
-Ap english
-AP stats
-Ap english lit
-Ap psych
-Honors Anatomy
My Sat Score was around 1600 but I am taking it again and doing a rigorous course right now and planning to get an 1800 or 2000.
I really think that my stats suck and I am really hard on myself so please help me calm my nerves and tell me which schools from above you think I can make it into?? It would mean the world. thank you.
Calm down. TAKE THREE DEEP BREATHS. DO IT WITH ME. IN. OUT. IN AGAIN. OUT. ONE MORE TIME IN. OUT. Are we calm now? Good! ^-^ If not, repeat until you are.
Realize that CC is the WORST place to cure anxiety. 40% of kids are gods who seem to have more than 25 hours in their day.
OK. Let’s talk about reality now. My UW GPA is the exact same as yours, but weighted is like 4.1. What is your UC GPA? We need that to chance you. Are you instate? If not, will you be able to afford the $55k+ a year? Your race won’t matter, since UC is banned from AA. SAT score is low, but remember GPA is king. Get it up to at least 2000 to have a solid chance at these schools.
If you have nerves, don’t come to CC to cure them. Please know imperfect people are ok. They still get to go to college. They still get degrees, and they still get jobs. In the end, you have the chance to right almost any wrong.
Thanks for the calm tricks lol college is literally my life so it gets overwhelming. Also, thanks for answering. I am in state. I calculated my uc gpa on the roger hub website and it said about 3.96. Plus I am working hard on my SAT score.
Yes and no. Private schools may give you a full ride if they really want your type of student. Look at their financial aid websites. If you are in California you may get some California state funding.
Always have some private school options. The UCs have very strict GPA requirement even in senior year. Many students got rescinded because of bad grades senior year. Private schools don’t care so much.
I agree with the aboves. You do not need to worry much as you have a decent GPA and if you improve your SAT to around 2000 (or try your luck with ACT?) you can get into one of the mid-tier UCs.
Cal-state schools are also good options for you and cost much less!
Will you graduate in the top 9% of your class? If so, you should be guaranteed admission to at least one UC campus, even if it’s not one of your top choices.
Business is a VERY competitive major. I believe UCI is the only one on your list with an actual business school of those you listed; others you will major in Economics. All of the UC’s are different. You should consider also schools like Cal State Fullerton and San Diego State University for affordability. Applying to schools as undeclared or a less popular major will increase your chances (in some cases) to being accepted; but then in the impacted public schools you will have a harder time to transfer once you are enrolled.
good hooks. With current SAT LA and SD are big reaches. Davis would be a high match, Irvine would be a bit less of a high match but still a high one. With a 2000, LA is still a reach-lowreach. SD is a low reach. Davis would be approx a match. Irvine would be a low match. 2100+ Would secure you SD as a match possibly.
UCR/UCI/UCB are the only UC’s with business schools so if you are interested in a business emphasis, I would focus on UCI and UCR. As mentioned in above posts, Cal States such as Cal Poly SLO, CSULB and SDSU would be less expensive options with excellent business schools. Also look at USC and Santa Clara University but only if you can get your SAT score up a bit.
