For the UC “Statement of Intent to Register” (SIR), is that just a basic deposit fee letting the campus know I am interested, but still waiting on other schools? Or if I fill out the form, am I basically 100% committing to that specific UC school?
Asking because USC is my number 1 choice, and decisions are really late coming out on (June 1 ), while the SIR’s due date is also June 1
Thank you. :-<
why post this 2 months after June 1st?
Agree^^^. May 1 is the UC SIR deadline for Freshman and June 1 for transfers. Why are you asking now? You are committing to the school if you SIR.
@silvermansachs Filling out a SIR (Statement of Intent to Register) tells the school that you plan to register at the school. There is a nonrefundable deposit that goes with submitting the SIR. In addition to the deposit, the SIR may also include basic questions such as residence status.
It is possible to cancel a SIR if needed. The specific process is different for each school.
You can see this document for an idea of how to cancel SIRs (for UCs)

@mikemac @Gumbymom Uhh I thought it would be obvious that I am talking about next year, fall of 2017 admission, guess not? Also @wonder77 Thank you so much! So I can pay the deposit, but if I get accepted to USC, I can cancel if needed? The deposit is no matter to me as long as I can cancel. Thanks again
@silvermansachs: SIR questions usually do not show up until the Spring after admission decisions come out, I guess that is why it threw me on the timing. Kind of an odd thing to worry about since you have not applied or have been accepted, but I think that being armed with as much knowledge possible is to an applicants advantage.
Good Luck.
One step at a time there… get admitted, then make your decision.
If you commit to UCX in May to secure your housing, etc. then, June 1, another school admits you - and after careful consideration, you decide to attend the second school - The UC won’t force you to attend. You would be expected to cancel you SIR at UCX quickly. It happens all the time with wait lists. You will loose your deposit at UCX. It is bad form to have 2 or more SIRs for any period of time.
I hope it all works out for you.
@NCalRent Thanks boss. Trying to get one step ahead of the game.
