UC Study Abroad for Transfers

i have been asked by family members, “so what are you gonna do with your anthro degree, work at starbucks?”

and i have been lucky to find mentors who encourage me and say that as long as i am creative i can find a job anywhere doing anything.

i actually want to go into academia so i am sticking with anthro all the way through, i want to concentrate on archaeology and in grad school further my specification.

the truth of the matter is that everyday the United States and its corporations are dealing with every culture. anthropologists are people they need on staff, so whether it be in the private sector or in the government sector i am sure that if i can market myself the right way… i will never be out of a job. in fact i wouldn’t mid traditional jobs in anthropology either.

if you are passionate and willing to go out there you can do alot with your hippie degree, dont let the haters bog you down with hate.

Of course, anthro is my life even if other people don’t understand it. Glad you have mentors though! That must help loads if/when things are iffy, lord knows encouragement is always welcomed.

I never wanted to work for a corporation since my liberal and hugely biased views make them the bad guys, but whatever comes in the way of a career will come I suppose. It’ll work out, I’m sure, not gonna worry too much for now.

What is it about archaeology that interests you the most? I mean I love it myself, but I also really love existing cultures because I get to ask a ton of questions and live like they do. =P

Also, if I’m poking around too much I’ll shut up.

well archaeology mainly attracts me because of the mysterious allure that ancient cultures have. we learn a lot about living cultures from dead ones.
also i will get to be a GIS specialist and that in itself is cool!!! i want to travel and see what i can find.

I’m doing a study abroad right now through my CC, but I’d really like to do a longer one once I transfer. A year would be great! My first picks would be Germany or Austria, as I would hopefully be able to take a few real classes instead of the English-language ones for foreign students. After that, it’s wide open, though I’d prefer a country where English isn’t the primary language. I’m a double major - anthro and German - and that could make it a little tricky.

some advice, if you go the anthro route, try to dual major in something at the under grad level, not only will it make you much more eligible for graduate studies, but it will give you SOME career potential elsewhere.

I’m an Anthro major as well! I WAS a Marine Biology major, but I took a Biological Anthropology class this fall and fell in love. I’m taking Cultural Anthropology now, and I love it even more.

I’m currently transferring to UC Santa Cruz, and I definitely want to go on to grad school…I was hoping Berkeley for grad school, but the program is apparently very, very difficult to get into (<– does anyone know more about this?)

A lot of people don’t really KNOW what Anthropology is, or assume it people won’t make money with it. A friend of mine told me, “Anthropology is the guarenteed way to not make any money.” That makes me nervous, but I plan to be in school for a very long time.

The Anthropology major is appealing to me because it’s so broad. Anthro majors can go to law school even.

yeah Anthro majors can do anything, medical school too
but i am taking several languages and thinking of becoming a certified interpreter for a couple of them and i am considering double majoring in ____________ to make myself more marketable.

Anthropology a major that encompasses everything from art to anatomy of humans.

I am so glad there are a few of us on here at College Confidential <3

Yay, an Anthro thread!

Yea it’s so ridiculous how ppl who don’t know what Anthro is (“Isn’t that the study of old people?”) tout that you won’t make money at it. So either I should be a lawyer, doctor, major in business, etc (become a cliche drone, no offense to those majors) to be successful? 1, money doesn’t equal success, 2, most majors are’t set up to make a crapton of money anyways (even engineering geniuses start at 50K), and 3, you can be just as successful with Anthro as other majors.

On a separate note, which Anthro programs would you guys rate the best: UCLA (research-y?), Cal, UCSD, USC (don’t hate, be realistic, it has Visual Anthro so you can take film classes)?

exactly joliefillie!

well i am really conflicted right now because Cal, UCLA, UCSD and UCSB all have wonderful Anthro programs.
everything i read says Cal and UCLA are THE best.

here is actually a cool thread about Anthro rankings on CC:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/462183-top-colleges-anthropology.html

i am just gonna have to concentrate and research more about what i want because, i dont know what i want more or best.

as for USC yeah they have visual Anthropology and so does CSULB but their programs are way outranked by the UC system.

Merci, madmoiselle for the link, that is what I heard too, but was in denial (My bf goes to USC :). Ya I don’t know which school I want more either. Have visted most campuses except Cal. So maybe ROAD TRIP!

pas de quoi,joliefillie :)

yeah Def. Road trip.

omg the choice got harder, look at this prof. at UCLA:
[Faculty — UCLA Department of Anthropology](http://www.anthro.ucla.edu/people/faculty?lid=1278)

i would love to learn Biological anthro from him <3

Hahaha, there’s a good reason to go to UCLA, and proof of hotness UCSB grads. I’m perusing the UCLA Anthro pages right now too! Can’t sit still here waiting endlessly for acceptances, have to obsess.

Attn: Anthro homies here is a thread answering some questions about the Anthro dept at UCLA and Cal.
maybe it will help in ur decision?

anthro bump

I want to study abroad
I know this sounds weird but going abroad for me is WAY more exciting than going to the other side of the US (not that that isn’t exciting, too!!–but, a whole new language, food, customs, idk it’s just so intriguing!)
Can you do a year if you’re transferring over? I’d like to altho would they think it’d be weird if you actually spent one year “in residence” at their school?

a year would be too long, since we are transferring to the university we dont have much time on campus. i think a quarter is okay.

Could we still graduate after 2 (not 2.5) years though? ANNDDD while summer is the perfect time to do it, aren’t we gonna miss out on research/internships?

Check with the department of your major for study abroad. There’s an excellent summer program for English students, that is great for transfers and those getting financial aid. I’m going to give you a few links below for some of the blogs on this program – which is the summer Shakespeare program that has a foundation in . . . going to see Shakespearian plays!
