well i was just wondering does the uc system give you points 4 doing certain things through out hs? and what is elc? does it help ?

I'm not sure what "points" you're talking about, but I do know that UCSD uses a point system when evaluating applicants. If you get above a certain amount of points (~7000, I think, not sure) then you're admitted. You get points from GPA, SAT or ACT, community service, etc.

ELC: Eligibility in Local Context. It's when you're in the top 4% of the graduating class at your high school. You gain guaranteed admittance into one of the UC's (not of your choice).

oh okay thanxs.... I heard about it by a friend i was just asking thanks but does not having elc hurt ur chances?

The UCs don't consider class rank when evaluating applicants, however, if you are in ELC, then they will see that and, obviously, infer you're in the top 4% of your class.

Having ELC only helps your chances, but not having it isn't that big of a deal. As long as your GPA is good, then you'll be fine. I wasn't in ELC and got into UCLA and Cal; there's this person at my school who was ELC and got rejected by UCLA, so you never know.

thanks cos i dont think i will get it but i have a 4.2 and the highest gpa at my school is a 4.5

That's still pretty good; a 4.20 weighted GPA makes you competitive for UCB/UCLA, even if your class rank is outside of the top 10%.

thanks ............

Yeah, key word in "You gain guaranteed admittance into one of the UC's (not of your choice)" is NOT OF YOUR CHOICE.

ie, you're probably not going to get immediately accepted into someplace like berkeley/la right away. Perhaps UCR or UC merced - who knows..

last year's elc schools were Santa Barbara, Riverside, Irvine, and Merced. You can assume it will never be Cal nor UCLA.

I qualified for, but chose not to apply for ELC... it didn't affect my chances in the least. I had a friend who lied about getting ELC to UCLA.

sorry, you cannot "lie" about elc....the UC system gives you a number based on their calculations, the system generates it....

When this top 4% thing is calculated. Is it. top 4% UC [10th/11th] GPA. or all 4 years?? can someone elaborate on this. thanks

A-g courses, 10th and 11th only, bonus points (uncapped) for all UC-appoved honors/AP courses. Community college courses will count (with bonus point) only if placed on your HS transcript by your GC. The UC calculates the number itself, based on a listing of transcripts submitted by your HS.
