I've submitted a TAG for UCD, UCSB, and UCSD for Fall 2011.

I know that TAG decisions will be released beginning early October and will differ for each UC campus, but what happens if they do not respond until after the application deadline? Do I file the application as if there is no TAG?

Since students must earn a cumulative 3.0 minimum UC GPA earned by the end of Fall term 2010 for UCSD, how does this work if my semester ends in December? Does this mean they will respond with my TAG decision after my semester is over?

I heard UCSD will not respond until January/February, is that true?

Is an outstanding personal statement still necessary for the application if you've been TAGed with the UC? Or will an average personal statement be fine?

*Please feel free to leave any other information/advice you feel will help. Thanks again :)

You will get a decision by November 15. You should file an application regardless of TAG as you may qualify for admission without TAG.

The UCs will offer you TAG conditionally and specify the requirements you must complete to receive TAG. If your GPA in Fall dips below 3.0, UCSD can withdraw the TAG offer.

You should make an effort to write a decent personal statement. Incoherent ramblings will look bad.

Hehe, personal statements, I’ve seen a few I’m fairly sure just wouldn’t fly.

I was sitting in the locker room, staring at the texture of the lockers on the wall when I noticed an electronics diagram etched next to some gang tagging - clearly, the artist had mistaken a NOR gate for a XOR gate! Perhaps my destiny was to be an electrical engineer after all!

vs

As the president of the Alpha Beta Phi Gamma Kappa association, the Computer Science Club, the Asian Studies club, and as the leader of the dance squad, I have the leadership skills to be an Electrical Engineer!

The second one was a UCB Computer Science applicant that also had a part time job, spent hundreds of hours in community service jobs, and maintained a 4.0 GPA with 21 units per semester; The first one ended up at UC Merced.

@AskMsSun: I’m sorry I wish I was more clear. What I meant was:

Should I skip the part of the application asking about my TAG? Should I file the application not “clicking” the box that indicates a TAG (“Do I file the application as if there is no TAG”)?

Thanks :)

@wwLink: Thanks for the input. I do see the drastic differences between the two and why they were admitted into such different schools! My question was for students who is signed up with the Transfer Admission Guarantee. Since they’re “Guaranteed” admission, as long as they fulfill the requirements, will it be necessary to submit an outstanding personal statement or is an average/appropriate one enough?

lol Rosie I’m sorry, those were meant as a joke and were littered with sarcasm and pretty dry humor. Satirical humor on both sides, I suppose.

I recall hearing a UC rep say (and I can’t remember but I believe it was UCD), that if you’re approved for a TAG and maintain the requirements, your personal statement doesn’t matter.

As everyone else would say, when applying to ANY UC, the personal statement cannot hurt you, it’s only there to help you. If you are fairly confident and happy with your choice of a TAG’d school, you can go ahead and toss a joke or two on there if you wish, so long as it doesn’t insult anyone. The admissions reps may really like that, as they spend all day staring at boring hyperbole about Little Johnny - the president of 4 different clubs that doesn’t actually ever sleep. :)

Very short answer:

If you have a TAG, don’t worry about it - you’re in!

I believe only UCSC and maybe UCSD don’t actually guarantee admission to a major (especially impacted ones), but they do guarantee admission to the campus. In those cases, prompt 1 would seem to play a more important role!

This year all Schools (UCSD included) are required to inform the students of their TAG decision no later than November 15 but some students will be notified early than that. That should give you plenty of time to fill out your applications; I believe you have till the end of November to fill out your school apps.
Im going to wait until my TAG decision is in to submit my application to the school itself.
As far as the personal statement, Im going to do the best I can regardless of whether or not I get TAG, but thats just because Im paranoid lol If you get TAGed you’re in.

Ok, so I signed a tag contract for several of the uc’s, but I just finished my stats final and I’m really hoping I don’t get a d in the class. It’s not just about the tag contract, but is getting a d a rejection from the uc’s? Lets say I get a d, but I manage to take it in the winter time, would that be a big difference? It would suck getting rejected just because of this one thing. It’s really not a hard class, just a lack of study and not having enough time because of work
