UC TAG Program Question

As I was looking at the TAG program I realized that the UC"s required you to take a transferable Math Unit and pass the course before the fall of 2014. However I have not done that yet but I was planning on taking a higher math class later this year because I have taken only one math class Math 114(Alg 2) which does not count as transferable. Does this mean I am ineligible for the TAG program since I have not taken that transferable Math class?

TAG is free to submit so submit it anyways and declare which math you will be taking later on in the next year in your TAG application. You’ll find out in early to mid November if the TAG made it through or not.
There is a section where you will listing your coursework; put it there. This future math class will go under the Spring 2015 section (assuming you’re on semester system) as a PL-Planned class.

You never know but it can’t hurt to try.
Good luck!

Unfortunately, according to page 3 of <a href=“University of California Counselors”>University of California Counselors; you are unable to TAG due to your math being incomplete by the end of Fall 2014. However you may still be eligible for regular admission, so don’t let this deter you from applying.

Is there any way you could get a class now?

You will be ineligible for UCSB TAG, although with your rudimentary math you can still apply there as a regular. (They want to see one math grade, whether transferable or not.) I just read UCD TAG now wants math by fall starting this admission cycle. So I would not TAG those two, but any other of the four should be OK.

Irvine was a surprise to me, they want it done by Summer 2014 which seems really early!

Are you sure about that?..
Wow, you’re right! They’re starting to play hard ball to thin the herd. No surprise, I guess.

Yes?

Page 3, “TAG Qualifications”, last box on the Irvine row under “completion deadline for mathematics course (UC-M)” it says Summer 2014.

Hmmm, well I think they want to see a math grade. I guess it’s an issue with ppl passing statistics. UCSB said that was the reason for even having regulars have at least one math grade. Summer is early but it shows them the grade. And you know, the TAGs are getting out of hand. They can’t be guaranteeing them all much longer.

^Agreed

Edit: and SB wants 30 units excluding AP/IB credits! They are definitely making it more difficult, esp. for one year transfers!

I would like to thank you all for your replies! I’m in a quarter system and my school hasn’t started yet so i am still able to apply to classes. I plan on taking Stats 10 since I’m a business major, however many of the teacher ratings on ratemyprof were less than ideal and I have a weak point for math. Should I just grab a class to ensure TAG? I believe that I could be able to pass the class but it might be very difficult and time constraining considering I might be taking 5 classes Bio 10 w/ Lab, Poli 1, 2 PE classes, (Math 10). My previous class would have been arts to fulfill IGETC but I could always push that later to make room for Math 10.

What is your major? If one of those classes (bio, for instance) are not major pre-req you could take it P/NP if you haven’t used up your 14 credits allowed for P/NP. You must take math for a letter grade, of course. A good teacher is key to statistics, I do admit.

Could you take bio or poli sci in winter or spring and bring the arts back?

Also, why are you taking two PE? For the AA? The AA is not needed for transfer so unless you really want an AA, you could just skip it (as long as you have 60 transferable).

My major is business administration and I’m taking those classes as grades since on the IGETC it mentions “that all the courses in the IGETC needs to be completed with a ‘C’ or better” which is why I don’t think I can take it as P/NP and I remember in my counseling class my counselor mentioning that taking PE was a requirement for graduating which is why I’m taking it.

Also I think I might have miscommunication fulfilling IGETC as I would be fulfilling one portion not the entire thing as I have 2-3 more classes that I need in order to complete everything. The Bio 10 and Poli 1 fit nicely into my schedule with teachers that have good ratings and my art class would be online.

If this helps to get a better idea! If needed I will also mention the CC I go to (unsure if thats what people normally do)

Major: Business Administration

Summer 2013
EWRT 1A
Math 114
Coun 200

Fall 2013
EWRT 1B
Econ 1
Acct 1A

Winter 2014
Econ 2
Acct 1B
Intro to Bus

Spring 2014
Bus Law
Hist 17A
Humi 1
Humi 13

Summer 2014
Spch/Comm 10
Met 10

Currently: 3.27 GPA and 62.5 Units attempted

Fall 2014(Possibly)
PE
PE
Poli 1
Bio 10+Lab
Arts(Online)/Math 10

How is this:

Fall '14
poli sci
stats
bio
PE

Winter '15
PE
arts, etc.

What do you have to do winter and spring?

Sadly the bio really messes up my schedule :frowning: but I might do what you suggest and drop one of my PE classes in order to grab that Stats class.

For my winter/spring I would basically just have to take a class in Arts/Humanities as one of the classes that I took (Humi 1) counts for either section &,more Business classes, possibly higher up math. I probably have to talk to my counselor just to see what classes I have to take.

Yeah, well my suggestion is largely based on the fact that the stats teacher doesn’t have a good review. Why is that so often the case? Anyway, you need to take it in fall and you need that grade to be as good as possible…

The main reasons that I have read on ratemyprof is that either the teacher rambles, are not helpful, the lesson is rather difficult to follow, and the huge amount of work required just to stay on top of the class. The average rating overall from what I see ranges from a low 3 to a high/medium 2. Which is the main reason why I was so skeptical/scared of taking upper level math.

If I am unable to do TAG will this hurt my chances of getting into a UC’s considering my GPA (3.27)? I might not be able to do TAG if I feel like I am unable to do an adequate job in stats I will probably drop it since it would be hurting me more than helping me.

Stick with the stats, get tutoring if you need to. You will really be helped with TAG.

Ah, okay will do. Thank you so much for your help!
