UC "Tiers" or rankings?

I’m just curious. I’m sure UCLA and UCB are the top schools, but I was wondering about the other ones. How do the UC’s all rank against each other?

UCLA/UCB

UC San Diego

UC Santa Barbara/UC Davis

UC Irvine

UC Santa Cruz

UC Riverside/UC Merced

what are you ranking on?

Schools we’d like to go to? “Prestige”?

There are only three tiers:

Top: UCLA, Berkley, SD
Mid: UCD, I, SB
Lower: UCR, SC, M

Is that what you’re asking? Rankings are sort of subjective…depending on what source you’re getting them from…and your major…and other factors.

tier1: UCLA/UCB
tier2: UCSD
tier3: UCD/UCI/UCSB
tier4: UCR/UCSC
tier5: UCM

UCM can’t be in the same ranks as UCR/UCSC because it isn’t even ranked yet (it’s only 5 years old)

I would say:

UCB
UCLA
UCSD
UCD
UCI
UCSB
UCSC
UCR
UCM

its goes like this

UCB
UCLA
UCSD
UCD/UCSB (their tied)
UCI
UCSC
UCR
UCM

This is how it is on the u.s. top ranked universities for 2010. Forgot what the site was but its one of the legitimate ranking things like princton review or whatever.

This website:

http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/2010-2011/top-200.html

Ranks them as:

UCB
UCLA
UCSB
UCSD
UCD
UCI
UCSC
UCR

I’m curious. Forgoing the formal ratings, why do so many people think UCSC is low tier? Having been here for a couple years, it seems like it’s almost on the level of UCI/UCD when looking at academic programs.

^it’s just rankings. In official rankings it’s ranked pretty low.

I think it’s still recovering from the “narrative evaluation” years. Unfortunately, many saw this as a “pass/no pass” thing while, in fact, an evaluation could (and often would) offer FAR more information about the student than a simple grade. Profs could discuss specifics of projects, make comments about how it was to have you in lab, etc. It was a great idea, but didn’t offer grad school “a number” to plug in.
The school also has a reputation for “pot smoking”… I’m not sure that’s justified. There’s no “greek” frat/sorority thing going on, so I’m guessing that it’s actually one of the more sober campuses!
It’s a BEAUTIFUL place and very friendly. I suggest any potential applicants visit, see each college and judge it only then. :)

^
UC Berkeley is also considered a “pot smoking” school. And UCSC is ranked number 72 in the US News Week top colleges in the US. That’s pretty good considering none of the CSU’s made the top 150 (SDSU came in at 183). The only reason why people look down upon UCSC is because they compare it to UCLA and UCB. And who cares about rankings, we benefit from having Silicon Valley right by and tons of people hiring from there :)

According to U.S. News Top Public Schools - National Universities:

Berkeley is #1
UCLA is #2
UCSD is #7
UCD and UCSB are both #9
UCI is #11
UCSC is #29
UCR is #41
