What are the rules/policies for UC to UC transfer? Specifically from UCI to Cal

I am a Political Science major that was admitted into UCI for fall 2012 and am trying to transfer to Cal if possible and earn my degree there. Is this even possible? Do they accept applications from other UCs?

I wouldn’t recommend doing that. I am a UC to UC transfer but I did not plan to be one going in. It makes more sense to go to a community college and transfer from there. I got lucky in that I learned early on that I wanted to transfer and the school I wanted to transfer in to gave the same priority to both community college and UC transfers.

UC Berkeley discourages intercampus transfers. They believe that if you are going to any other UC school then you are already receiving a great education and should be fine where you are. You have to have a good reason for wanting to transfer.

That being said, there was a member on here who successfully transferred from UCR to Berkeley. They had a really high GPA, perhaps higher than the average GPA people apply with? I am not sure as I am not familiar with Berkeley.

It is definitely possible. Yes, the application is expensive at $70 but it’s $70 that could change your life. Sure, there will be many things working against you (the difficulty of intercampus transferring, a basically nonexistent articulation between UC campuses, satisfying semester requirements with quarter courses, ect.) but without submitting an application, you have zero chance at all. Just go for it. The worse that could happen is you get rejected and finish up at UCI (great place).

You should contact Berkley or UCI to plan out a course of action to get you to Berkley. There are no exact articulations for pre-reqs between the two schools, but either party could point you in the right direction. Talk to your counselors at UCI! They are really nice people and will help you. Don’t worry about offending anyone by trying to transfer. They’ll totally understand. Pre-reqs are key for top schools like Berkley. so that should be your #1 priority. Also, try to finish your GE’s early on and do it strategically; some classes you can take and they will satisfy two GE’s at once. UCI has a ridiculously long list of GE’s to finish so it’s best to start on that (and it helps if you go in with lots of AP credit).

thank you very much for the response guys! i will definitely do it and hopefully finally get in

I am transferring to Berkeley from Ucr for fall2012, I suspect im the one allfields is talking about.
Get the highest GPA you can, be involved in only “quality” things. Honors, resesrch internship…

Btw im econ. Look on the 2012 uc to uc thread to see everyone’s stats

It is totally possible to transfer from another UC
I know a lot of people say it’s extremely difficult, but it isn’t that bad. I am from UCR and transferring to UCLA this Fall. Like everyone says, get a very high GPA and finish all your GE’s and major pre reqs. I think UCLA cares more about GPA and not so much about extra curriculars, but I would recommend you do EC’s if you want to get into Cal. I feel like I didn’t have any, which is probably why I didn’t get in even with a high GPA. Good luck to you! You can check the UC-UC transfer thread for advice and stats :)!

if it helps, I am transferring this fall to UC Berkeley from UCSD as a poli sci major too. so it definitely is possible.
But I did have have a 4.0, but dont let that discourage you! My friend at UCSD whos the same major also is transferring to Berkeley with me and she definitely had around a 3.7

I think if you can get a 3.8, shown youve done a lot towards your career (labs, internships), and have a “good reason” of why youre transferring other than “berkeley being a better ranked school” you should be good. UC transfers are possible! But if I could go back I would have taken the community college route. its much easier to transfer from a CC and its also easier to get a 4.0 - many of the people I talk to at CalSO transfer orientation last week from CC all had like 3.8+

OH AND i forgot to add, this girl I met in my orientation group got into UCI during her freshman year and even SIR-ed to Irvine, but last minute she dropped and went to CC. now shes at berkeley as a transfer :). I’d do what she did if I were you! save money and easier to get into berkeley from CC than UCI
