Hey guys, I'm going to be applying to UC Berkeley and UCLA (from UC Irvine) this fall. A few things:

Intended Major: Statistics
Current Major (UCI): Quantitative Economics
Current GPA: 3.72

VP of Field Hockey Club
International Club
Undergraduate Finance Association

Math Tutor in Irvine (1 year)
Internship at a Law Firm (Summer)

First, what are my chances?

Secondly, if I get in, I might have some issues with UC Reciprocity.

I need 5 courses to complete UC GE's (including the courses I've signed up for in Fall), 2 pre-requisite Statistics Courses, and 4 normal UCI stat/econ classes I need for the Q. Econ major.

That totals to 11 courses in two quarters. I can only take 10 max and I have to petition to do that (which I've done in the past and is not an issue). So I will need to take 1 class over summer session 2010 to complete the UCI GEs.

Can I take that class in the summer session, after possibly accepting an offer to another UC school, have it count towards UCI GE, then apply that with UC Reciprocity to the new UC I might attend?

galbitang: I’ve been interested in Statistics since my Sophomore year of HS, I suppose you have to be a specific type of person to enjoy it (as with most other majors). I plan on taking the actuary tests.

UC Irvine doesn’t have a statistics major (just a minor), which is why I am applying to transfer (the other undergrad schools I got into didn’t have a Stats major as well).

vintij: I don’t know where you heard that from, but it is false. I don’t know about Ivy leaguer’s applying, but a simple statfinder search would show that UCs accept plenty of other UC transfers without 4.0 gpa’s (yes, even Cal and UCLA).

you have a great shot. cr_books transferred from ucsd to cal for math, which is in the same department, with a gpa around 3.5. As for the UC reciprocity question, call the offices of undergraduate admissions at UCLA and UC Berkeley and get a direct answer instead of us guessing and possibly giving you incorrect information.

Thanks for the input guys. Yeah, I was definitely going to give them a call soon, I just thought maybe someone on here might have been in a similar situation and could point me in the right direction.

When I call, I’ll post the answer in this thread.

Hey hockey, I was a business econ major at UCI and I applied to Berkeley and got in. MANY of my friends at UCI applied to la/berkeley and got in. Your gpa is competitive so you should have no problem. Keep up the good work.

I think you have a good chance. It can be a little iffy because it’s uc to uc, but it is definitely possible! I think you should really work hard on your personal statement.

About reciprocity… I know that from UCSC to Cal, you get reciprocity if you finish all gen ed requirements at UCSC. Upon transferring, your GE requirements at Berkeley are exempt. I’m sure it’s the same for other UCs, but I encourage you to call just to get more details and reassurance for yourself.

I am transferring from UCSB to Cal this fall, and this is listed as one of the conditions of my admission;

“You may not attend summer session 2009 for the purposes of completing a minimum of 60 UC-transferable semester units, IGETC, or UC Reciprocity requirements. However, if you choose to attend summer for any other purpose (major requirements, courses of interest, etc) you must notify your UC Berkeley Admissions Officer by email and your final, official transcript must be received in our office by September 4, 2009.”

So you can only take a major pre-req class over summer, it cannot be a GE class. You’ll need to complete ALL your GEs at Irvine by Spring quarter.
