congratulations MrPinaple.

congrats, the way things are looking i might be joining you (school of humanities)

maybe just into the 1st? that way it's a whole month before SIRs are due? blah, I don't know. good question.

hey silver, hopefully you'll be joining me in the school of humanities too. good luck!

ok...this question is somewhat out of the blue...but I need to ask it....

what makes UCR and UCSC "low tier" UC's. why is it that when someone gets into UCR or UCSC, they feel embarrased? Someone told me that UCR and UCSC are the "trash collectors" of the UC system.

oh, and btw, has anyone been rejected from these two UC's??

ok lets not diss ucr, there's nothing wrong with the school. RIVERSIDE is basically the most boring city ever. There is just not a lot to do and the weather sucks. UCR tries, and its actually not that bad. I am transferring out of there though because i've been accepted to UCSB, and i'm still waiting for UCLA. I also have friends at Santa Cruz and they enjoy it there.

can't really say much about ucr since i haven't really looked into the college. i did a lil' checking on ucsc though. i think this issue WAS one of the main factors for its bad rep.

(taken from various parts of the ucsc website)
this is how it was until a few years ago...
http://www.cse.ucsc.edu/~pullum/others.html

eventually...

and this is how it is today. it seems they cleaned up their act in 2001 and now incorporate both systems of grading.

this thread is contains info from at least 2 current ucsc students.

as for myself, i'm definately heading there if i get rejected from ucla and berkeley. i just like the school. the job i want (single subject teacher) isn't dependant on where i get my b.a.; just i get one. if i should pursue a graduate degree, it shouldn't be a problem so long as i maintain my grades. any cal state undergraduate who's in a graduate program at a prestigious university can attest to that.

The only reason I did not apply to UCSC is because I hate the town of Santa Cruz.

I live about 40 minutes from UCSC, and it is a beautiful campus. I applied there because I was thinking a family situation might make me want to stay close to home, but it has since been resolved, and I'm choosing not to attend there.

I agree that a big part of the problem is that they allowed that narrative grading policy years back. They have an image problem (well, a problem if you aren't into this kind of thing) where everyone assumes they are all protesting hippies sitting under redwoods all day, smoking pot. And there is a lot of that, to be honest.

That said, I've had some of their professors as teachers at my CC and it is possible to get a GREAT education there.

But the stereotype is what it is.

P.S. If you are looking to get a teaching credential after your bachelors degree, UCSC has an awesome program where you get the credential AND your masters in education in 2 years. It's worth checking out if you are thinking of going down that path. :)

Hope for everyone STILL WAITING on UCSD or UCSB...

I checked UCSB's website and was accepted as of this morning. It is completely random, guys. It's gotta be.

sabrina26, congrats !

congrats sabrina!!
:)

Thanks guys. I feel like my application is so behind! Hopefully I'll hear from both UCSD and UCLA this week....

don't worry, you're not the only one...i'm still waiting on UCSD too! hopefully your SB story is a sign that there is still hope :)

funny blurb about santa cruz by the way, and i completely agree. last week with the protest, it took me an HOUR to get onto campus from the base. UCSC is definitely one of a kind. let's just say...teachers were thinking about moving midterms because of 4/20...

for all those who are thinking about santa cruz, it's a good school, especially for those who are interested in physics and marine biology, however, if you are deciding between SC and somewhere else, i HIGHLY recommend that you come visit the campus (maybe even stay for a night) and see if the location is right for you. sabrina 26 is right, it is a gorgeous campus (princeton review's #1 most beautiful campus) but the culture is so different from any other school that you will go to.

the best thing about going to santa cruz is not being around all you goofy kids with parents from the east coast.

Niwatori - by law the UCs are required to post all decisions by April, but UCLA has been breaking this rule for the past few years. At least that's what the Berkeley rep said. However, I've just now searched the UCOP website and could not find any definitive "rule" that says all decisions should be posted by the end of April, so I don't have any real proof of this. It makes sense, though, that they want to inform us at least one month before we have to submit SIR's.

porcupyne:

i'm in the same position: if i don't get into ucla or cal i will probably go to ucsc... even if i get into ucsd. i think i will go to their transfer day just for fun!

btw, did anyone get any financial aid info online or in the mail from ucsc? i haven't heard anything

can't wait for wednesday wooo...

you can check on the type of financial aid they're offering if you log onto the website. i also recieved some mail a few days ago. i'm pretty sure you can log onto other uc websites for financial aid info also.

thanks for the info! i checked and nothing is showing up. gettin kinda worried.

i dont' know if this might help

Admissions Decisions

If you are a fall-term freshman applicant, each campus you applied to during the filing period will notify you whether you have been admitted generally between March 1 and March 31. If you are a transfer applicant, the campuses may notify you anytime between March 1 and May 1. You can refer to each campus's admissions website for more information about notification.

These notification dates apply only to applicants for the fall term who file during the November 1-30 filing period. Fall applicants who file late or applicants for winter or spring should contact the campus Admissions Office regarding admission notification periods.

does anybody know the specific admission rates for UCLA are for each dept.?
