I am beginning to fill out my UC app. and was a little confused on the major portion. It says "Major" and you select it and then there is a place for "Alternate major" to be selected. Is there any reason to select an alternate major for UCLA? Thanks!

*Also, I have fullfilled all of the prerequisites required by UCLA for Sociology. I am also going to be applying to UCSD, UCB, and UCI. Obviously, I cannot fullfill every single requirement for each universities specific requirements for the major, so how will I be penilized for that?

bump, help please :-)

The alternate major in the application serves as a "back up." Let's say you put your primary major as Sociology and alternative major as Psychology. If you get rejected as a Sociology major, they might still offer you admission as a Psychology major.

For the pre-reqs question, it really depends on the competitiveness of the school. For UCI and UCSD, they prefer the applicants that complete the pre-reqs over those who are not. But, if you are missing one or two pre-reqs, they'd still consider you. For UCLA, it's auto reject if you don't complete the pre-reqs. For UCB, if you don't have the pre-reqs completed for certain majors, they'll reject you. But for Sociology major, I believe they're more lenient and will still consider you even if you're missing one pre-req. Just that, they'd prioritize those who have completed the pre-reqs over you.
From UCLA admissions:
Q: If I am not admitted under my first choice major, will UCLA review me for my alternate major?

A: Since transfer applicants are reviewed based largely upon major-specific preparation course work, UCLA does not usually review transfer applicants for any other than their first choice majors. If you are willing to be considered for another major you can list an alternate major, but listing an alternate major does not guarantee that you will be considered for that major if you are not admitted to your first choice major.

The alternate major is one of the major pros of TAP. UCLA will consider your alternate major if you aren't admitted to your first choice major. I think that if you don't have TAP they really won't consider your alternative major. Still though, it can't hurt to put one down.

Thanks so much, that helped a lot!
