Aww man, thanks Joe. I'm coming out of a California Community College. Does that work in my favor?

I'm going to submit my updates on the 24th/25th of January because I can't sign up for my spring classes until the 24th so I don't want to submit any incorrect information. My winter class grades will be available most likely February 16-20, so I won't be able to submit my grades in this update. Is there going to be another time before admissions letters that we'll have a chance to update our applications again? or not?

Well the site says if you change any class on your intended class update to contact the Admissions Office of the school applied.

Asif,

California Community College is good. It means you have a chance. But, I'm not familiar enough with the program to be be able to tell you how good of a chance. It's sort of subjective because your soft factors are very good and could put you on an even playing field with the median accepted GPA folks...or not.

--Joe

Asif,

One more thing that could make a difference: grade trends. As in, are you going up, down, or staying steady?

a little off topic BUT:

i've applied to all the UC's (and others) that i want to. i have a pretty good chance of getting into all the places i want (i have a 4.0 so far at my cc) but i have this problem. i'm really not motivated to get A's any more. i'm only taking a measly 2 classes this spring (7 units total) and i'm just not sure i really want to keep trying. blah...

if i get a B's in those 2 classes ( which would def be a downward trend in grades) will they rescind their offer, assuming i get admitted?

i doubt 2 B's will affect you.

Transfer from CCSF
Applied to UCB, SDSU, and Univ. of Utah (already admitted, it's my safety school)
GPA 3.96
IGETC done
Major: Geography
Major prep: Will have all but one class done by end of Spring
ECs: Volunteer work for OneBrick, also some volunteer work at Strybing Arboretum in the nursery, scooter club involvement, full time employment.

I'm taking three classes this semester for major prep, two for SDSU and one for UCB, and I have to say that I am thinking far more of my future schooling than my current grades. It is nerve-wracking to have to wait until April 30 to know if I've been accepted at Cal or not, especially when SDSU wants the intent to enroll by May 1. At any rate, I am so happy this is my final semester at CC, and proud that I've made it this far. Good luck to everyone!

Freuerewerke, two Bs won't make a significant impact on your acceptances but maintaining that high GPA would be beneficial if you have grad school in your sights.

thatgirltoo: I agree it makes me nervous too, but you've got VERY good chances of being accepted with that GPA. Why didn't you apply to UCLA as well?

transfer from Foothill Community College
GPA 3.5 ( 3.8 at time of applicantion submission)

Major: Computer Science
Major prep: lots of courses missing
ECs: Work at IT company as programmer, worked at movies, logistics intership

i have a quick question. do the colleges look at your gpa at time of submission or time of update ? and also whats my chances

They look at your GPA at the time of the update. It will be pretty tough at to get admitted at UCLA and Berkeley considering you are missing a lot of major preparation courses which is critical for impacted courses and engineering. last year the UCLA average admit rate for computer engineering was 3.67 so being under the average GPA and not having major courses completed will hurt your chances to both UCLA and Berkeley. The other UC's you will probably have a pretty good chance depending on how stringent they are on major prerequisites. UCSD might also be a little tough because their engineering programs I believe are pretty competitive.

Well, I only know exact statistics from UCLA so we can use that to make guestimates of your chances for other UCs.

Computer Science
admission rate of UCLA applicants: 35.98%
Average GPA of admits: 3.67

Given that, I'd say you'd have a shot at the mid-tier UCs. They look at your updated GPA (which includes Fall 07). Also, major prep coursework is a big factor when considering admission.

thanks for the reply thedude44 and samus. what does mid-tier mean ? like ucsd or uc merced haha

Mid-tier: UCSD, UCD, UCSB, UCI
lower: UCSC, UCR
merced... well let's just say merced is special. It's too uniqueto be ranked.

I would rank the UC's as follows:
Top tier: UCB, UCLA (UCSD can arguably be rated as a Top tier school)
Middle tier: UCSD,UCI,UCSB,UCD, UCSC
Bottom tier: UCR, UCM

but regardless any UC you get into is going to be a good school.
Since Merced is so new it has not had the chance to be recognized.

yeah thats cool. btw have u guys heard of some transfer fellows research at uci ?

Yeah, got an email from them a week ago. Not sure if I want to do it though... I need more info than a promotional pamphlet.

is everyone offered this opertunity or just select students

"junior-level transfer student with a competitive GPA (3.0 or above)"
Most everyone.
Still, I'm wary of what they mean by "fast-track" and "finish in two." I think they want transfers to get in and get the hell out as fast as possible. I for one intend on staying 3 years.
