UC Transfer Fall 2008

Wow, looking through the responses in this thread, there seems to be a lot of philosophy majors.

Do you guys think, or know, whether philosophy will become an impacted major this year for transfers? :(

Also, I don't really have an EC's. My stats are listed above this response; will it really hurt my chances of being accepted? I have trouble with EC's or obtaining a job because I work my class schedule around for my parents because they work and then there is no one to take care of my two little sisters. So, I always coordinate my class schedule so I can take care of them. So it really has been difficult to be apart of ECs. Do you guys think if I explain this in my statement, it will be a valid explanation.

Thanks for any help.

inch: Thank you, sooooo much for the info, and especially for uploading those files. I really appreciate it. See you this Saturday, maybe?

tangent I'm so stressed with midterms this week ahhhh!

De Anza-Foothill to Berkeley (L&S) , UCLA, UCSD, UCD, UCSC, UCI
Major: Computer Science
IGETC : in progress
Prereqs: done except 1 course. Still need 2 or 3 courses for optional.
UCSD require some more too. Probably done after Winter quarter.

GPA : barely 3.6 :( :( --> this is the problem.
I take high units with Honor and mostly got A.
However 1 quarter because of overestimating myself I screw everything and got Bs and one C on every class, including prereqs.

Honor Program completed after Fall. No TAP though.

EC/Work: average
Clubs & PTK officer.
Tutor & TA
Papers at research conference (co-author, lame assistant in reality), at least graduate level.
Impress computer instructors at school but I guess not really a big help on transfer. I will mention in personal statement, at least describe my dedicated time and effort. Actually this stuff makes my schedule become hell and GPA drops.

Ok, application time of the year and I'm worried. I see lots of people surrounding me in Foothill-De Anza and this board got 4.0 or very high GPA and mine is low for computer major. Now I always got the feeling of failing every UCs in next May. I know I got little chance for Berkeley and LA but I don't know about UCSD.

Yes SUNKISSED that would be a valid explanation. I am a phil major as well. There is no money in philosophy and the job market is horrible so trust me there will not be alot of phil majors. As for Ecs the only revelant one i am doing now and have done in the past is job shadowing phil teahcers who do not teach at my school (it would be awkward if they taught at the school). You might be able to find a night class, if that time is open for you. And join a phil club perhaps.

einna, i got so much stuff to do thati may not attend. i'm determined to go though, and i probably will. i ran into carson, another poster here, at the first workshop by chance. maybe i'll see you there. for your information, the first email i received about this second workshop asked that participants bring those 3 worksheets filled out. also, it will take place in the humanities building A65.

freudcarl,
Why do people always say there is no money in philosophy and no job opportunities?

I mean with philosophy, you can get into law, or you can go to grad school and become a professor. Of course, these take time, but so do most worthwhile professions.

I don't understand. Also freudcarl, would you mind if I asked you what your goals are with majoring in philosophy?

Thanks.

going to the personal statement workshop at ucla this saturday?

Besides law------ The job market for phil professors is bad http://chronicle.com/jobs/v45/i17/4517spotlight.htm .... I plan to teach (so far)

The reason I am doing philosophy is because all the other disciplines are sooo dogmatic and I love philosophy for its own sake...I could end up a bum but still be a philosopher.

De Anza College to (UCLA)(UCB)(UCSC)(UCI)(UCSB)(UCD)
Major: Psychology
GPA: 3.73
IGETC: Completed by Spring
Major Req: Completed by Spring
EC's : Very few

Los Angeles City College
Applying to: UCLA & UC Berkeley & a few privates.
Major: Communication Studies
GPA: non cum-3.97 cumulative-3.92
IGETC: Completed by Spring
Major pre-req's: My CC doesn't offer 3 out of 7 major pre-qs ,,, do any of you think this will greatly impact my chances? it's kind of out of my control, I figured.
EC's- Dean's List since fall 06, environ. club, lu club, honor society, worked the la film fest, other random volunteer work.

Cuesta Community College
Applying: UCB (only UC campus I want to attend), UCLA, UCD, UCSD
Major: Political Science
GPA: 4.0
IGETC: Completed by Spring
Major Prereqs: Completed by Spring
ECs : Volunteer on city council members campaign, AGS, Dean's Honors, Red Cross DAT member.

Unfortunately, my internship with a state senator was moved to the spring, after I apply --should I mention this in my personal statements at all? It's a bit disheartening that my strongest EC is after I apply.

Ektaylor, it's not worthwhile to put it in, even though it is a nice EC to have. You already have volunteer experience on campaigns, and it may not be too late for you to continue with working on a campaign for the presidential candidate of your choice. You can make a casual reference as to how you will have the opportunity this spring to explore state government but that you're focusing on campaign experience right now. I don't know, just don't sound like you regret that you couldn't fit an EC in before application deadlines.

Fullerton College
Applying:UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UCSB
Major: Philosophy
GPA: 4.0
IGETC: Complete
Major Prereqs: Done for UCLA, They dont Articulate for UCB and UCSD!!! Same problem as woman of troy.
ECs: Volunteer at Hospital and free tutoring, Honors Program, PTK, Presidents Honor List, Job shadow of phil prof.

Are our chances worsened if prereqs dont articulate??

^ I don't think so, since they do not articulate but you can do the extra mile by taking it at another college that offer it then that's even better

nancie- thanks, I think I will have to do that. I don't want to regret being lazy later on even if it means i have to bus it a bit far :P

Has anyone here tried to transfer within UC's?

I think there are many in this forum that have tried UC intercampus transfer and there have been successful applicants.

Hey Collegelurker! You said you are PTK officer at De Anza, is Charlie your advisor? I'm also an officer in the region. Good luck with everything!

does anyone feel like throwing up whenever they think about transferring? When you get the letter in the mail of acceptance or rejection? when you submit your application?

it's so nerve wracking =[

CC: Santa Ana College
