Hello! I really want to transfer to either UCB or UCLA from a California community, however I am stuck in a predicament. Currently, I have a 3.9 GPA however there is a chance I will get a B in anthro this semester. My question is, would it be better to get a B, or not turn in my final (30% of my grade), and fail the class so I can retake and get an A. Which would be most appealing to the admissions office? If it makes any difference, I failed a bunch of classes and dropped out of school a few years ago, so I already am going to have a semester of W's, and another of academic renewal. On another note, do they usually prefer retakes over academic renewal? Thanks in advance for your expertise!

Earn the “B”!!! Do not fail and retake it. It would be better to take another a couple summer courses and earn A’s to pull up the GPA. You are still going to have a great shot at UCLA even if your GPA drops a bit, so please just try for that B!

I would also strongly recommend staying in the class, especially if all of your other grades are going to be As.

If the OP fails that class on purpose so as not to get a B he should be prohibited from ever registering for it again and be forced to live with that F on his transcript permanently. This type of behavior is one reason why it is so difficult to get classes at CCCs and supports those who would cut state spending on higher education due suspected wastefull use of resources by the schools.

… i think intentionally failing a class because you have a B is the worst thing you could do. The F will be on your transcript forever… they WILL see it even if you do retake the class. They will expect you to explain it and if your excuse is that you were going to get a B so you failed on purpose… … Lets just say they would much rather see the B.

Thank you all for your informative answers, I really appreciate them. I will definitely stay in the class and HOPEFULLY get the A.

Get that B!!
UCLA and UCB will not accept C’s, right?

Definitely take the B. many grad schools don’t honor academic renewal or repeats so an F would ruin your gpa. Same with employers.

@ppmhotcocoa UCB and UCLA definitely accept Cs.

Thanks everyone for the info. Got the A by the way!
