UC Transfer Hopeful - Fall 2017

Hey everyone! This is my first post here, so please excuse any forum fouls (if there are any).

I am currently at a CCC, looking to transfer to either UC Davis (Environmental Science) or Cal (Conservation and Resource Studies) in Fall 2017. At that time, I will have completed IGETC, all major prep, and my college’s Honors Program. I currently have a 3.83 GPA, and am the President of my schools Alpha Gamma Sigma Honors Society chapter, which I plan on continuing with until transfer.

My question lies in this - in a previous semester, I received a “C” grade in a math course (which it turns out I will not need for either school). This grade brought my GPA down considerably, and is quite a sore spot on my transcript. In your opinion(s), will this severely impact my chances? I feel as though I am a fairly strong candidate, but am contemplating re-taking the course to hopefully replace it with a higher grade. If I do not need this course for my major/transfer, should I re-take it, or simply try and explain the grade on my application?

Thank you!

I was under the impression you cannot retake CC courses in which you’ve received a C grade. Tbh though, especially considering it’s not required for your major, a C is not the end of the world and doesn’t disqualify you at all for either school. They will care a LOT more about your major-related coursework than courses that aren’t major prep, so you should simply strive do continue doing well in those classes coming up to strengthen your application.

Even if you could retake it, what kind of impression would that send? You’re better off beefing up your GPA with courses that “broaden your intellectual perspective”

Transferring to UC Berkeley as Math (Applied) major?
I’m applying this semester from a CC, and most likely my gpa will be around 3.82. Only thing concerning me was the B I got in Calc 3. Would that significantly lower my chances? Not related but I got all As in my compsci classes(since I was doing computer science first), also IGETC is done by spring.
