UC Transfer/IGETC and foreign lang.

i am unclear if i took up to Spanish 2 in hs do i need to take any at CC to complete IGETC

if you're unclear then go check with your high school to make sure...if you complete the language req at a CC then you need one year

ok but if i have completed up to spanish 2 in hs, does IGETC require more than that

Read the IGETC it says on it .

Area 6 – Languages Other Than English (required by UC only)

Proficiency equivalent to two years of high school study in the same language

ASSIST Help Pages

Hmm... my understanding was that either you could have taken the Spanish AP Exam and gotten a 3 or higher, or taken a year of Spanish in college (3 quarters).

To satisfy the requirement (if you haven't done the above), you need to take a placement exam and place into Spanish 4 or higher (out of 6), but I'm not sure what those classes cover/how much they would be equivalent to...

2 yeas of high school study

or 1 year of college study

So you need to take Spanish I and II in college to satisfy it if you did not satisfy it in college.

You can use AP if your CC accepts them and the UC accepts them to at the score you got

What if your trying to transfer in and your major (nursing) doesn't require a language. Does UCLA automatically require one.

nursing is VERY different especially if you are going into their RN to BSN program.

I suggest you review the website

Most majors do not require a language, people take language to satisfy IGETC to satisfy GE

For one though, even IGETC is not required, you can complete the GE requirements in other ways.

UCs do require high school language equal to 2 years. In order to satisfy GE requirements you should either have the high school requirement satisfied or the IGETC satisfied. However you do not have to satisfy GEs to gain admission.

So you can be accepted to a UC with no language high school or otherwise. Or should I plan on taking some Spanish.

you can be accepted yes, but then you still have to take it at the UC. .. including meeting THEIR GE requirements then instead of getting certified through IGETC.

So is it better to wait and take it there or do it at CC and go over 80 semester unit's. Thanks for all your help also.

well, language at a UC has annoying scheduling, especially at UCLA, you are looking at 5 units a quarter at most likely 4 times a week, lecture MWF and then a discussion usually on an ALTERNATE DAY.

I would complete IGETC without a doubt. Why pay more for UCLA and worry about scheduling?

Also, you may have other lower division requirements that do not get auto waived like they do with IGETC - for examples the US Govt and INsitutations, is waived if your done with IGETC.

And there is no problem in going over 80 semester units as long as they are CC units, you still get all the subject credit for those courses.

But, because you are in Nursing, check the UCLA website, nursing units and rules may be different simply due to the nature of that program and the fact that it is in another school within UCLA. I do not have much experience in nursing school admissions/requirements.

Generic/Prelicensure program

The Generic/Prelicensure Nursing degree program is intended to prepare entry-level nurses to care for patients at the bedside. The program has been developed according to the principles of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention; moving from a systems, population-based approach to a cohort-based or unit-based perspective, and culminating with an intense focus on individual-level of care. Strong emphasis will be placed on clinical leadership and critical thinking skills.

Prelicensure Admission Requirements

* 90 to 105 quarter units (60 to 70 semester units) of transferable coursework
* a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 in all transferable courses
* Applicants from a California community college must fulfill IGETC. Others transfer students must complete the School of Nursing's general education requirements.
* Applicants must fulfill the university's American History and Institutions requirement.
* completion of prerequisite courses (listed at right) with grades of C or better

As you see, for nursing actually, they REQUIRE IGETC. That is very different from college of letters and sciences. You actually have to have IGETC to be considered for admission to their school

Malishka, you'd be a great transfer counselor. I think you'd be able to tackle all of the douche bag CC counselors three times over. I can't even count how many times I've received inaccurate information for college counselors.

:) thank you

Unfortunatly i learned a lot of this stuff b/c the counselors didnt provide the info... yep sucked to be me.. I think the biggest i would suggest to everyone here is to read their college catalog and the UCs catalog- it is the contract between you and your school.. it has everything in it.
