I am at a CCC and have two semesters left after this one (so I will be transferring Fall '07, since I want to apply to Berkeley and as I understand it they only accept fall transfers). My major is history, and I am working on the prereq classes; I would like to add English as well, and am also almost done with the prereqs. How do you do this? Do you choose one (the one with the higher acceptance rate ;)) and add the other once you're there? Or apply as a double major?

I'm not planning on switching majors, so this is just out of curiousity, but can you switch majors once you transfer to a UC? Obviously it would take you FOREVER to graduate, but do they let you do it?

You choose one and add the other after you're in. As long as you have the pre-reqs done (and are not trying to get into an impacted major), it should be pretty easy to petition. Make sure that you apply for regular admission under your more impacted major and then try to add the easier one. Also make sure there aren't any restrictions for doubling. For instance, UCLA randomly decided last year that they would no longer allow anyone to double in psychology if it wasn't their primary major. This becoming standard for most impacted majors.

That said, doubling with history and English shouldn't be a problem, but always make sure to read the fine print.

Oh and switching would be difficult because they REALLY stress that they want you out in two years. If you decide to switch and don't have at least some of the lower divisions done, it probably won't happen. But it varies from school to school and from department to department.
