I was just updating my coursework in the update area, when it asked me why I was going to have a gap in my education because I don't have coursework planned for Summer 2010. I wasn't expecting this! What does one normally put in the "explanation" box? I don't want it to detract from my application that I'm not planning to take any classes - I've been going non stop (including summer and winter sessions) since Summer 2008 and I was just planning to take next summer off, so I could travel to Europe. Now I'm feeling a bit guilty for that decision - do they look down on people who aren't planning to continue school in the summer?

No, I don’t think so. All I put in the explanation box was that I’m going to be finished with the IGETC in Spring 2010 and that my college has not decided yet whether or not it will offer courses in the Summer. I don’t think they are going to hold it against you if you don’t take classes at your CC in the summer. Plus, some students will probably even start taking classes at the UC they are admitted to in the summer. So, I don’t think it’s going to look bad if you take the summer off.

Is taking the summer off considered a “gap”? That is kind of crazy.

No, I don’t think it is.

Unfortunately the update page feels that way! Thanks for the advice, I explained it and I’m not so nervous anymore.

No, the only reason why it says that is b/c the online UC system can’t really tell the difference b/w summer & fall/spring semesters. they treat all of them as the same thing. summer is always optional at CC and isn’t considered as a “gap”

Yep, as long as it isn’t a fall or spring semester, you’re fine.

They make you write a comment though. I just said “I’m not planning to take any courses over summer.”

I just put “IGETC satisfied” or something along those lines

im kinda thinking i should just put a class on there, just cuz when they ask you to put a reason it makes it feel like Im skimping out on school.

I don’t see why they would make you comment. It’s their own rule that you can’t count summer courses for pre-reqs. So why would anyone go to summer school at all? Might as well just take the summer off and travel.

^the system cant tell, it treats summer as any other semester/quarter.

Do you guys think it’s ok to put what I put? Just… “I am not currently planning to take any courses over summer.”?

^ thats prolly fine, i might add “because I plan to transfer out after Spring 2009” to that.

Yeah, I think that is fine. I got in everywhere I applied and I did not take classes over summer 2009. I think I pretty much put the exact same thing you are putting: “I will be done with my requirements after Spring 2009 and am not planning on taking courses the summer before I start at a UC” or something like that. I don’t think they will hold it against you.
