Final results- unconditional for St Andrews and Aberdeen, Conditionals Edinburgh City Uni of London, a No from Kings
@virologistuk yeah ik i am a uk student. but i cba anymore bc i already have my firm+insurance offers.
@ammielove Hey, sorry to stalk you from thread to thread but may I say there is literally no use of withdrawing your offer from UCL just for the sake of making a firm and an insurance choice? If you do that you’ll also have to withdraw all of your other applications to US colleges because if you accept an offer via UCAS you’re obligated to attend the university (isn’t this how it works? Tell me if it’s not) if you meet your offer. In case you get into a school in the US that you’d like to attend more, you’ll have to willingly fail your examinations so that you don’t meet your UK firm or insurance offers, in which case you risk your offer to a US uni being rescinded due to a shift in grades or w/e.
I assume it’s like putting down a deposit here and then deciding not to go. If you change your mind they cannot put you in jail.
@pathesthetic uk and us systems are completely separate so i can do whatever within each system. i can do what i want and no i am not legally obligated to go anywhere… even if i got the grades i could decide not to go to uni at all! lol its not a crime to go to a different university. you can only put a deposit for one US university but internationally there is no rule bc the systems are different. uk offers are conditional so in fact it makes sense to accept a conditional uk offer and a non-conditional us offer.
US students waiting on a conditional UK offer, absolutely should SIR and deposit at a US school. They’d be crazy not to.
So glad my son got his APs out of the way last year to satisfy his Oxford offer so we’re not waiting until July on those. Went unconditional at the end of January.
@HazeGrey unrelated but nice profile pic!
I withdrew my application to UCL
Final Coice update- hi all who have offered advice over the past year- (including @collegemom3717, @PurpleTitan , @jupiter98 and others). My D and I just returned from 10 days in Scotland where we attended post offer days at the university of Glasgow and Edinburgh. We stayed 4 1/2 days in each city to try to get a feel for each and what it would be like to live there, as well as learning as much as we could about each course (CS). To both of our surprise, Glasgow came out as her top choice, mainly because of the feedback and information we received at the post offer days while talking to current CS students. We know Edi is higher ranked internationally, but the program seems better for grad students than undergrad. We sat in on CS classes and talked extensively to current CS undergrads, and it became apparent Glasgow was the better choice. We did like the facilities at Edi a bit more- especially with the renovation of Appleton Tower, but my D still preferred the course at Glasgow. She also wants to take Digital Media as her outside course at Glasgow, a program that is not offered at Edi. So glad we made the post offer trip - it was so valuable in clarifying what my D wanted in her undergrad experience.
Congrats on decision @KaffeineKitty
We put our deposit down at St. Andrews
Congrats, @KaffeineKitty and @VickiSoCal!
Congrats, @KaffeineKitty- and well done. I know you both put a lot of work into the process. Glasgow (both town & uni) is very much under-appreciated. Hope she has a wonderful experience there- & thanks for sharing the happy news.
Congrats @VickiSoCal - hope it’s a wonderful experience!
Just wanted to provide an update for my friends here. My son did not get any offers of med school in the UK, perhaps because he applied as Irish (with French residence) instead of British (which he could have done).
So, he will go to his backup school, McGill, where he will do bio-medical sciences undergrad. We are not excited that he will be back over the pond, but are overjoyed for him - and he loved McGill on his visit last summer.
Thanks for the update, @alcibiade! I know it’s farther for you all, but McGill is a great option
I suspect that you are right that, with Brexit looming, the nationality piece was a factor (even with the ‘special relationship’ between the UK & Ireland).
Parent of a 2018 student here. Do you mind if I ask about what ACT and AP scores your kids had? My son wants to go to Edinburgh. Has visited and loves it. He exceeds all of their minimums (31 ACT, 5554 on APs) but I’m curious what it takes to get an actual offer.
Mine has five 5’s, one 4 and four 3’s.
She applied for chemistry and her 4’s and 3’s were all in literature and language and humanities courses. My impression is the schools didn’t care.
If he exceeded all the minimums in required subjects, he is good to go. Good luck! Edinburgh is great. My daughter just finished her first year there. We love Edi
New update for my friends like you, @collegemom3717, my son got a late offer to Newcastle medical school, which he accepted one week before departing for McGill.
