@christygb she has not heard form Bath. If she does UK I suspect it will be St. Andrews or Durham. She did not like Edinburgh, too spread out and chemistry department too far from center of campus. At St. A. or Durham, everythign is walking distance from housing, no need for shuttles.
@VickiSoCal We loved St. A’s, and haven’t heard from them yet. We had a hunch that Durham would feel something like St. A’s, and as an international Mom, I like the idea of the smaller residential college concept for socializing, convenience and support. It will be interesting when he visits there, and I look forward to hearing about his impressions. It is nice to know that you found it to be a very nice place.
I got an offer from UCL 2 weeks ago, but nothing from imperial for biomedical sciences.
Question for those of you who received offers (or with kids who received them). Did you receive a letter in the mail fairly soon after the offer? DS has unconditionals from Durham, Manchester, KCL, and Edinburgh. So far he received only one official offer letter in the mail, and that was from Manchester. I understand that he will need his official offer letter to open a bank account and conduct other business in the UK.
^ My son received offer letters with all of his offers but they came between 2 weeks and 6 weeks later. All letters cae I think with brochures on the programmes, housing info, etc.
I’m pretty sure we’ve only gotten a letter Saint Andrews. I believe upon confirming you get the paperwork for a visa.
I do not recall having any use for these letters.
@jupiter98 I read that we need to bring it with us to open a bank account and possibly for registering with an NHS doctor. They seemed emphatic that it be an original and not a printed copy, so I created a folder to hold them until my son makes his decision.
Anyone who got an offer from Imperial?
@christygb I was under the impression that the UCAS ‘letters’ (you know where you can see your offers and it says ‘view letter’ or something?) are enough to open bank accounts and all that. I didn’t recieve any in the post when I applied, only a postcard from Bristol saying congratulations. However I am a UK student so I don’t need a Visa or anything. If you’re concerned then contact the university, but as all of these universities are well accustomed to having international students then I wouldn’t worry. Congrats on the offers!
@christygb you have offer letters; once you have committed there will be an enrolled letter- that is the one you need for the visa, etc. Hang on to the enrolled letter. fyi, there is usually an international students time during fresher’s week, where there will banks (& phone companies) hawking for business.
Be aware that (depending on the uni) you may not get a lot of the ‘welcome’ packet stuff until August, after A level results come out and they know which of the UK students will actually be enrolling (ie, have met their conditions).
@greenstudent @collegemom3717 Thank you for your information!
DS was just assigned St. Aidan’s College at Durham University. He thinks it would suit him very well and can’t wait to check it out in April, when he visits. Anyone have experience with this college?
Aidan’s is lovely & friendly. It’s not as formal as some of the colleges (no robes, though a few black tie events). They seem to be a social lot- there always seems to be something going on in the college- and the hill isn’t that bad!
My son’s excited by the lack of formality and purported friendliness! And he will view “cardiac hill” as his new workout regimen
@christygb how did they notify? My daughter is VERY anxious to find out college assignment since she was accepted two months ago.
Also, which one did he list as first choice?
@VickiSoCal he found out this morning. He kept his choice open, since we hadn’t really visited, and even though it’s not an attractive college, the college’s informality and reputation for friendliness really suits his personality. I look forward to hearing your daughter’s assignment! I’m sure it will be soon. P.S. St. Aidan’s is very close to the science buildings.
Was it by email?
I’ve been given offers for Law at KCL and Law and Social Policy at Edinburgh. I’m waiting to hear still from UCL and LSE. Does anyone have experience with LLBs or know what path most Americans who study law abroad take? Would I go to law school to get my JD after or just need to earn an LLM?
