Last year, I was sure I was going to get admitted to Berkeley, but what are my chances really? I'm confused now because it seems that they are becoming more selective, even though their acceptance rate is above 20%.

As I said, I considered this a safety until now because my bro got in without many ECs, but now I'm unsure.

What are my chances? (Sorry for not posting in chances thread)

Above 20% is still very selective. I think Berkeley’s acceptance rate is at about 22%, making it one of the most selective schools in the country.

You have good stats there, but so do many applicants to Berkeley. Some applicants with 2250+ SAT’s were rejected, and some applicants with ~1800 SAT’s were accepted.

Personally, I would raise the SAT score to 2200 or above, if possible. That would improve your chances by a lot. Berkeley is not your safety at all. Could be considered a high match, but it is a very competitive school to get into.

if you’re in CA you’re in. its easy to get into.

^ disagreed, only on CC would people say that it’s ‘easy’ to get into. To the OP: I’d say that given your profile, Berkeley is the epitome of a “match” for you.

Instate yes, much harder since slots have been eliminated to admit more OOS’ers.

For OOS, much easier.

OP: low income makes it a low match. Write the small essay about overcoming (any sort) of adversity – make it up if you have to; perhaps an eating disorder?

I don’t know how hard it is for people in state to get in but looking at our school’s Naviance (NY), I’d say the selectivity is comparable to Northwestern, Cornell, and Georgetown.

I’d say you have a great chance, just raise the SAT score to at least 2100.

Berkeley, like many of the UC’s, are accepting 10-15% more out of state applicants to fill budget gaps. So, if you are in-state, they are getting more selective, but out-of-state, they are getting less.

[University of California: StatFinder](http://statfinder.ucop.edu/) has statistics on applicants and admits for the various UC campuses including Berkeley, which can give you an idea of where your stats stand in relation to others who were admitted.
