UCB and Comp Sci

Hi, I'm currently a freshman at Sac City Community College. I've already taken 8 units in the summer between my first year here and my graduation last July 2005. I plan to transfer in two years into Berkeley's indvidual Comp Sci major (BA) (the one under the college of letters and science NOT the electrical engineering one). Right now I'm in Calc III and Linear Algebra as a freshman, have two honors courses, and a C++ class. I have 18 units and I'll be done with all the math avaliable here this Spring. I also have 3 AP classes form highschool that waive some credits. Right now I have a 4.0 with my 8 units from summer. Judging by the looks of this semester, I'll probably have a 3.8 total come end of fall. I never bothered to apply to Berkeley in highschool because my parents had lack of faith I'd get in with a 3.8 :. My question is how hard is it to get into the BA version of Comp Sci at Berkeley? I know the EE version is like impossible. Do you think with my stats I'll be able to make it? I talked to the Berkeley rep. multiple times and she's impressed that I am where I am but I still feel like I'm not going to make it. On the percentage chart Comp Sci has a 50% chance of acceptance (which is pretty high compared to the others). What's everyone elses opinion? Keep in mind I'm talking about the College of Letter and Science Computer Science Major, not the Engineering one. By the way does anyone know what the difference is? It seems like the Comp Sci under the College of Letters and Science is only offered at Berkeley.

In recent years, L&S CS has not been as popular due to the dotcom bust and outsourcing. I think you are in if you can keep that 3.8 overall and 3.5 in Math/CS.

Thanks for the reply. Any other comments out there? Also what's the major difference between the Comp Sci BA and the BS version?

Does your junior college have an agreement with CAL? If they do, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND you get on that contract. By the time you apply, iit won't even be funny how the competition will get. I would stop focusing on academics [since you seem like you have it under control] and start gaining ECs as well. Applying to such a prestigious school as CAL will require a tad more than just a 3.8 GPA.

No, SCC doesn't have an agreement, in fact I believe that none of the community colleges have any agreements with CAL. I do have a bunch of ECs though. I'm interested in majoring in game design and already have 3 games under my belt and tons of experience with the concept. I also am in honors club, intervarsity christian club, planning on joining phi theta kappa, and thinking about doing swimming and water polo (did them in highschool). hope that works.

Oh I also run my church's website and teach sunday school regularly. Hopefully that'll all count. Should I do more? I mean seriously some of those kids who apply have way more than I do.

If you don't get paid for teaching Sunday school, that would be great for volunteer work. Add some leadership in and you should have a strong application.

Yes I don't get paid, I also teach at ATS for $$$ in the summer. Should I try holding a part time job as well?
