UCB and UCLA Dreaming

Hey everyone. I'm currently a senior in high school applying to UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UCD, UCSB, and UCSC. My profile is at this link:

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=118337%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=118337</a></p>

But if you don't want to read it, here's the abridged verson: 4.17GPA (3.82 un-weighted; 4.00UC); 300+ hrs comm service; I SUCK at standardized tests! (SATI: 1740; SATII: Math590, Bio590); I'm over-involved with the school music dept.; Awards: Boys State nominee, Nat'l Youn Leaders Conf., etc.

I have a pretty good idea where I will (and won't) get in. My favorites right now are probably UCD and UCSD, which I don't feel bad about getting in. I'm interesting in finding out more about transferin after 2yrs at a CC. I know about the TAP's and TAA's and all those things; I just was wondering these 2 things about being a CC transfer:

1) What shows up other than your CC GPA? Do any high school awards, comm service, etc. show up on the UC application?

2) If I got a GPA between 3.80-4.00 (I'd do my best for the 4.00) at a CC and made my self look good by using awards, comm service, or whatever I can get credit for, would I get in to UC Berkeley and/or UCLA?

Thanks everyone,

If you put in 60 units (junior standing) and complete the IGETC your high school record becomes irrelevant. Whether or not you want to use test scores is up to you, though it is not required. Also, when transferring from a CC, less emphasis is placed on extracurricular activities, but it won't hurt. The most important aspects to focus on are completing the IGETC, getting good grades, and writing a superior essay. Your personal statement is extremely important. The average GPA for transfer students at UCLA is 3.5; however, some people who have higher than 3.5 don't get in, and some who have lower than 3.5 do get in. Again, the quality of your essay is absolutely critical.

PiratesLife, I don't know if you read my profile from the link, but I work a ton as a music clinician for comm service (probably 200hrs worth if I went to a CC over 2yrs.) So if I did 200hrs of clinics, a little of something else (tutoring, canned food drive, intern, etc.), meet all the IGETC requirements, got a GPA around 3.8ish (shooting for 4.00), and write awesome essays, would I get in to Berkeley and UCLA. I should also say that I plan on being an English major (journalism and/or creative writing) and writing essays is what I do best...especially if I had 2yrs to work on them! Thanks for your input. P.S. The help is great and if you say you're and expert I believe you, I'm just wondering how you became an expert. Thanks for the help!

Well, then what is your question? You could have a billion hours of community service, but you still have to take the breadth requirements to fulfill the IGETC. Either you take AP exams or the class. There are no substitutes. You can't fill your english 2 or biological science requirement by tutoring. You have to take the class. If you have already, fine. I don't understand what your saying. I consider myself an expert because I have gone through the application process twice, and have thoroughly examined every aspect of it TWICE. I've consulted a plethora of counselors, received advice from friends who have been accepted to CAL, LA, SD, Irvine, SC, USC, the whole shabang.

Cool cool, just interested in your past. Tutoring was another example of comm service, not a sub for classes. Here we go, I know nothing is guaranteed, but can you give me my % chance at UCLA and UCB if I did this for 2yrs at a CC? 200hrs comm service, 3.80+ GPA, meet all IGETC requirements (taking AP tests for Bio, Gov, both English this year), great essays. Thanks for the help.

Your chances would be good. You should aim for a 4.0 instead of a "3.80+" simply because a 4.0 is within your grasp! And if you were part of the TAP program (honors kind of thing) you would essentially be a lock for UCLA. As an English major I think you would be a match for Berkeley.

Thanks gabew42. The "3.80+" was a random number I made up as a worst case scenario. Unfortunately, there are no CC's w/ TAP within driving distance (I'm in NorCal) and Berkeley doesn't have anything like a TAP anymore, but a Berkeley rep comes to the CC campus I would go to a lot. I've met him and talked about my planning, so having a good connection w/ a rep wouldn't hurt my chances! I'd probably sign a TAA just incase w/ UC Davis (I really like the place!) and shoot for Berkeley and UCLA. PiratesLife, anyone else, what are my chances?
