hahaha, and umm, I think i'm flattered nicopico! :p Thanks for the support. It's kinda rough when most of the ppl you know already got rejected from berkeley/ucla to call them up and say, "guess what? i got in." lol, i don't wanna come off like i'm showin off and shieet, but jus wanna express my genuine happiness.

jus heard the phone go off (it was my cellphone) around like 5 and when i checked the phone # it was a 510 #. I was all, oh shieet, it's Berkeley!...

Then when I picked up, I think it was the lady that I spoke to earlier regarding transfer appeals (i think there's only one lady taht the admissions officers transfer your call to). She said something about Congratulations and Fall Admission, so i said, "Wait Fall Admission? I'm in. OMG!! OMG!! &$@#&($@#(&$#@(&#@(&) THank you!!!!"

Busted Biatches and Hoes at Big Berkeley, Here I come! Woot! LOL. I'm jus playin. (I hope this doesn't turn out to be a farcical event, i still don't have it confirmed on myberkeley and since it's 7pm i'm wondering when they'll change it).

I got a call around 6 today from Mr. Albert Lucero (I think?). I was going to screen it because I didn't recognize the #, but my friend decided to picked up for me...and the next thing I know, I was in. I can't believe it...I really don't feel like I deserve it. For those of you who haven't heard back yet, I sincerely wish you the best of luck.

I'm an idiot. I should have appealed for Fall admission. Is it too late for me to appeal? I do have prereqs to take this summer which was probably why I was deferred to spring.

I got a phone call today too! I almost fell over! I was debating whether or not to appeal for a long time and i finally decided to at last
minute ....I am so glad i did. I was especially surprised cuz they were so strict about you having "significant new information" and i didnt.

Congrats to those who also had a successful appeal! And good luck to those of you still waiting!

I restated my qualifications, told them that I would be recieving a 4.0 this semester with 18 units (not like that should of changed things anyway cuz I had a 3.96 when i applied), explained how I would contribute to the student diversity, ect. Oh and how I had been working this last semester.

Minorities (Blacks, Hispanics, and Native Americans) are not applying to Berkeley at the same rate they did prior to 1997 and prop-209. More than any other UC campus, Cal faces a crisis when the largest demographic is showing disinterest. People don't like to be the sole ambassadors of their race I guess. If there's one thing I hate about Berkeley, it's the lack of socioeconomic and visual diversity relative to other UC's.

Nicopico, please provide the statistics to back up your claims. If anything I would think that schools like Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara, with their high percentages of whites, have a lack of "socioeconomic and visual diversity" relative to other UCs.

sorry g1a2b3e I don't feel like typing statistics at 3 am, but you can find good info/data in books such as:

Silence at Boalt Hall by Andrea Guerrero
The Case for Affirmative Action in University Admission by Bob Laird
And numerous reports by UCLA law professor Richard Sander.

Yes I've visited Cal, but perhaps I don't see the big picture since I'm an engineering major. Last year's entering class of 800 in the college of engineering didn't have a single African American which I think is odd.

I think you're wrong about the "more than any other campus, Cal faces a crisis..."

Here are the numbers:

From 04-06, there was a 21.9% increase in African-American applications to Berkeley.**That was the highest of all the UCs. **UCLA was 14.3, Santa Cruz 13.1, Santa Barbara 7.1. Davis, Irvine and San Diego 11-12. Riverside applications went up 7.5.

UC Berkeley also had the highest increase in Chicano/Latino applicants, 25% over the last two years, compared with 13.4 for UCLA, Irvine 21.6, Santa Cruz at the bottom with a 9.7 increase.

Berkeley has had an overall increase of 14.6% over the last two years. The percentage increases in minority applicants are much higher than the overall increase percentage.

In the past Berkeley had issues (from 1995-2004, 31% increase in African-American applicants, 55% increase overall), but not significantly different than University-wide numbers. Also, it is hard to compare to the other UCs during that period considering the tremendous growth of the newer campuses.

Next, about the diversity at Cal relative to other UCs. It's clear that Cal is not the least diverse. Cal has the highest percentage of African Americans of all the UCs except Riverside. Their percentage of Chicano/Latinos is low but aligned with Davis, Irvine and San Diego, as is their American Indian percentage. If you had to pick a UC as being the least diverse, UC San Diego clearly would be the pick.

there are lies, there are damn lies, and then there are statistics.

if your percentages are based off previous years, then you are punishing those who already have a good and steady admittance of minorities.

say for example, santa barbara allowed 10 black people in last year, and berkeley only allowed 5. now this year SB allowed 15 in and berkeley allowed in 10. suddenly sb is racist for their percentage is only a 50% increase to berkeley's 100%! o gosh darn those racists!
