ucb biochemistry/molecular biology

how high of a GPA do you need to be accepted to UCB as molecular/cell biology major? For those of you who got accepted as this major, could you provide GPA and/or any other perks please?

thank you in advance.

A word of caution…

My roommate applied to MCB with a 3.9X GPA (only missing the Physics sequence) and was accepted. She wound up switching to IB since it is a less harsh GPA killer than MCB and she is pre-med.

My friend applied to MCB with a 4.0 (only missing one out of four classes in the Bio sequence) and was rejected.

This just shows how strict they are on finishing pre-requisites before transfer. To anyone applying: You HAVE to have all the articulated classes done for Bio 1A and 1B so make sure you’re not missing one! Some of the assist.org articulations are confusing so double check.

Also, I applied as a Chemical Biology major in the College of Chemistry which is somewhat like Biochem but not. Biochem is available as a focus in MCB in L&S. Each of these colleges will have different graduation requirements.

I missed 1 out of 4 classes for bio and was fine, but that was a while ago (finished physics though).

I guess they have upped their minimum requirements:

If you don’t have these requirements, I would do another major. Chem bio is more lenient on the MINIMUM requirements.

Chem Bio:

“My friend applied to MCB with a 4.0 (only missing one out of four classes in the Bio sequence) and was rejected.”

Assist says you the required bio coursework is equivalents of BIOLOGY 1A, BIOLOGY 1AL, + BIOLOGY 1B, so there are only 2 from the bio sequence that are required for admission right?

Moorpark College doesn’t offer equivalents to BIOLOGY 1B. Must I complete both BIO 1A and 1B at the same college?

Which of the two majors, chem biology or mcb, is easier to be admitted to (in terms of GPA).

Chemical Bio has very different requirements from MCB Biochem. I wouldn’t choose a major based on what’s easier to get into.

In addition to Gchem, Ochem, Bio, Physics sequence, and Calc 1 & 2, for ChemBio, you additionally need to take Calc 3, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, 9 Upper Division Courses including PChem, and most transfers take Quantitative Analysis. For MCB, you have 6 Upper Division courses dependent on your track.

At my CC, you needed to complete 4 classes for Bio 1A and 1B articulation.

killmyentourage, in addition to having all the minimum required coursework (including the additional 2 courses towards chembio major), how many more major-prep courses had you completed prior to transferring? And what was your admitted GPA if you dont mind me asking. Thanks, appreciate all your help.

I don’t know my GPA because I have units from a 4-yr university (and I don’t know what’s transferable) and from 4 CCs. However, I’ve had a 3.8 for the past 2 years.

I finished Gchem, Ochem, Calc 1-3, Phys 7A & 7C (7C is for UD), Bio 1B (not req), Bio 1AL, IGETC by Spring '11. I took Linear Algebra, Differential Eqs, and the AC requirement this past summer.

don’t do MCB. Everyone and their mother does MCB.
