D decided on a whim to apply to UCB as a transfer in Media Studies....she went to complete the supplement on the UCB website and saw she is missing 2 Pre-req's--US History and Poly Science. Why those are pre-req's for Media Studies is beyond me...but will her chances of admission be reduced because she is missing those two courses? She has a ton of Film Studies and Comm courses...which should be pre-req's for Media Studies....haha. Her GPA is only 3.6 so she probably would not have been admitted but do you think this may have sealed her fate?

? why isn’t D on here figuring it out for herself? Anyways, this is from the UCB website. Media studies is in the college of letters and sciences.

Q:Is it true that I’m not eligible to transfer to Berkeley because I have not completed the necessary breadth/IGETC courses, even though I have taken difficult courses?

A: The College of Letters & Science denies admission if breadth and/or units are dependent on summer work. All other colleges – Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental Design, Natural Resources, and Haas School of Business – require units; however, not all of these colleges require breadth. If you are not eligible and feel you have an unusually compelling case to make, write it in the “Comments” box of the appropriate form on your Required Forms list at myBerkeleyApplication.

Thanks stanx89–and she is in Europe…and I am not…and she asked me to check here…OK

…and since when isn’t a Mother allowed to help?

And she will have a completed IGETC…just not the the pre-req’s for her major…

Can she take those two classes during the spring?

Do they deny admission altogether or just defer to Spring even if you didn’t apply for Spring cause I heard that happens.

I’m pretty sure she has lost her chances, considering that Media Studies is a capped major that is highly selective.

And wouldn’t she have known that she was missing them? It says you must complete one course from each group. Group I is US History, Group II is American Politics, Group III is either Anthropology, Economics, Psychology or Sociology, and Group IV is a Mass Media class. Kind of self-explanatory.

Here is the ASSIST page for a sample transfer plan to Berkeley media studies:
[ASSIST Report](<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>Welcome to ASSIST)

It does say “Complete as many lower division major requirements as possible.” However, US history and American politics are such common courses at community colleges that they may wonder why she did not take them.

Additionally:

Is she interested in the film studies major instead?

Yep, don’t think she looked at Film Studies and too late to change major, she just applied to UCB because she could never figuring she would have GPA to get in…but she got all A’s fall semester and popped up her GPA…so an outside hope not really knowing the pre-Reqs. She tagged to UCSB so she is OK with that decision, however; texted me yesterday thinking she might try to take pre-Reqs if she can crash them.
