UCB Econ vs. bus. admin.

seems like igetch works for econ
and breadth works for bus admin
and econ is usually easier to get into than bus. depts.

are both of these depts. really good?
and is there a place to put primary and secondary choice on major for junior transfer?

Berkeley only allows one major choice

if u wanna get mba it's kinda pointless getting an undergrad biz.

why do u say that
many ppl in finance and biz need to get an MBA to either switch roles in business or move up

how is it pointless to go biz undergrad?
think about it....
someone wants an MBA
if he picks something irrelevant like music
whats he gonna do in the 3 years of "work experience" before applying for MBA?
how many history majors or music majors or even social science majors actually own in the mcat for example and go ahead to be doctors?

lets make a little sense here

because people tell me that Haas Undergrad is basically a run-down MBA. There is very little to no need to get an MBA after graduating from a prestigious biz school like Haas (unless your major is specialized like finance/accounting). I didn't say that it's wrong or pointlessto get an MBA if your major is irrelevant like music or to major in a totally different field for grad school. In fact, I think it's a smart thing to do.

And if you wanna get an MBA, I suggest that you get an econ degree for undergrad. I am doing it too. My econ prof tells me that econ majors look much better when getting MBA than just biz majors. He may be biased but there are others who say the same.

well we can come back to this thread in 2 or 3 years and see how many of us got into wharton

Hm
Econ would be easier to get into than bus. admin @ berk
looks like i'm leaning towards econ! :D

yea thas one of the reasons too =D. To tell you the truth, from a friend who goes to berkeley, haas is only hard to get into . THe coursework is cake. Econ is much more rigorous and demanding than Haas.

The trick behind it though, you prolly wont be able to do anything with only an econ major. However, once you transfer, you can take business classes that will enrich your econ knowledge and will facilitate you on getting a job in biz field.

ibanking takes anything! :P
damn, i really want to take haas courses over econ :(
but i'm not sure what my GPA will be in a year and then i'd have to do breadth
"Business courses, prerequisites and micro/macro
economics cannot be used to satisfy breadth requirements." :(
econ would be must easier to get into, BLAHhhhhhhh asfdasf

Econ is easy to get into, but not so easy to get out of. :E

"here is very little to no need to get an MBA after graduating from a prestigious biz school like Haas"
seriously... WHAT?
fortune 500 companies pay their employees to GET their MBA even after graduating from haas or any prestigious business school.
i know too many graduates from your definition of "prestigious" business schools that go on for their MBA because many payrolls demand an MBA to move on to the next pay level.
no clue what ur smoking but welcome to the corporate world

oh btw how do u compare coursework between economics and business admin when the focus is totally different?
have u actually taken the books and compared them side by side? or even upper division midterms and analysis?
"business admin is crap cuz i m not applying for it cuz its also too hard" is not a way to talk down on something don't u think?
sry but my family comes from CPA, MBA and economics PHD only.
from my viewpoint your opinion is a joke

if you want to think so... okay lol

Ummm, I'm sorry to say AdamantineX but Guardianangel is dead on right on this one

no it's okay, cause i want to know myself. that's what I know from my econ prof and i think it makes sense. what would be the use of your undergrad biz then after you get an mba? I feel that econ is a better preparation for a person who wants to pursue an mba rather than getting a biz admin undergrad.

basically econ majors ur more into analysis. business admins from for example USC focus a lot and i really mean a lot of communication skills

if u come from a business family, basically i sat in MBA classrooms and its really nothing much to learn about.
basically when u go for ur undergrad business u have no corporate world experience, and after 3 years of working experience ur supposed to enter the class with more working experience, a new prospective.

then again many people feel that there is nothing much to learn.
MBA is basically for networking, rise up the ranks of the payrole.

ur undergrad is basically the chocolate cake, MBA is like the icing.
basically the jobs fresh out of business admin and econ are totally different.
and the effect of getting the MBA after a business admin and econ are totally different.
sure as an econ major u would probably benefit with knowledge,
but as a business admin it benefits your career more than anything.

well this is a pretty useful link u guys can read it up

I agree with that
