Please help! I'm split 50/50 between Berkeley computer engineering and University of Washington honors/ direct admit computer science/engineering. Any suggestions, comments, pros and cons would be appreciated. Thanks!

Congratulations on getting UW CSE Direct Admit!

Getting Direct Admit at UW is great because you are able to be a full member of the department the entire time you’re at UW. I was a direct admit for Fall 2010, and I can’t imagine myself anywhere else. UW is a top 10 program, and I has not only great research but great teaching professors. Undergrads are actively recruited by top companies.

Are you in state? Then you should ABSOLUTELY go to UW. UW is a great program regardless, but the value you get being in state is too great to pass up. Our head of department has said, there are many great reasons to go to California, but getting a good computer science education is not one of them. If you have any specific questions about the department, I’d love to answer them.

glad i saw this thread. my son too is thinking about ucb vs uwce (and some others). he’s out of state for all, so cost is all absurd. anyhow he is a direct admit at uw also, but he’s really wanting to major in math and comp sci. can you speak about the math department at uw? thanks

You should definitely visit UW, if you haven’t already. I wasn’t considering UCB (I was between UW, USC, and UCSD), but the visit was what really helped me make the final decision. I absolutely loved UW on the visit and felt like UW CSE could really be a home.

i was thinking about double majoring in math as well. looks like the applied math program is pretty strong.

Direct admit, same year as mlidge, here. I agree with what mlidge said.

Congrats all for being admitted!

Akali: Congrats on being accepted to the Cal program as well; I have some friends there that I met last year while interning and it’s a great program. What really boils down here is figuring out tuition costs, culture of cities, opportunities (industry, research), culture of the departments, and weather.

While I can’t speak for Cal, you are all welcome to PM me for more specific details on the UW program and what you can get out of it if you come to UW.

Also, please, please come visit if you haven’t done so! Besides the general UW tour, contact the advisers for CSE and request a tour! We have lots of students who will be happy to take you around and answer some questions. :)

Edit: UW’s ACMS program is wonderful! I have some friends majoring in ACMS either alone or doubling with CS or CE. I’ve heard great things about the department; I can’t tell you specifics though. :
