Applying to – UCB, UCLA, UCI, UCSB (I tagged Accounting/Econ), UCSD

Good luck everyone!

Also, I have some questions if any alums would be willing to clarify:

  1. Would being a declared Econ major impact my chances?
  2. Is it problematic if my essays don’t focus on business or entrepreneurship? I talk mostly about soft skills and past experiences so I don’t have many experiences with managing my own business or start-up (unless being an ebay seller counts haha)
  3. Do we still need at least 3 years of foreign language as a requirement for admission?

Thank you!

“Would being a declared Econ major impact my chances?”

Are you already at Berkeley?

No, I’m at a CCC transferring for my junior year. My Econ major is for my community college. I’m hoping it doesn’t affect my admissions for Bus Admin (my intended major). Thank you!

Are there HAAS folks willing to discuss stats or other topics? It’s rather quiet here

Oh you would be fine then. You’d only be a declared econ major if you declared econ at Berkeley, after taking stat and a upper div 101 or 100 class.

I think most AOs would understand that you arent a business major. You look like you have a great chance at Haas hopefully your PIQs are good however.

I see, thank you!

[ *][ b] Intended Major: Business administration (accounting emphasis)
[ *] UC GPA: 3.88
[ *] Extracurriculars (place leadership posiitons in parenthesis):
[ *] Job/Work Experience:
[ *] Volunteer/Community service: None presented on app
[ *] Personal Statement: Creative essay option (spoke about creative interest of numbers), how I capitalized on an educational opportunity, personal struggle I went through in my early life

[ *] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[ *] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[ *] Country (if international applicant):
[ *] School Type: CCC
[ *] Ethnicity: White
[ *] Gender: Male
[ *] Income Bracket: Middle
[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): N/A in my eyes

[ *] Strengths: Confidence in my post graduate career path and course of study to directly correlate with this path
[ *] Weaknesses: GPA, Math course taken (basically guaranteed rejection)

Applying to what schools? UCB, UCLA, UCI, UCSB, UCSD, USC, Chapman, Pepperdine, LMU, NYU, UPENN, UW

Thanks for getting the ball rolling @DingoOnCampus! Here are my stats (all after high school):

Major: Business Admin (plan to pursue a career in Marketing)
School Type: CCC
GPA: 4.0
IGETC: Will complete in Spring 2020

Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Low
Hooks: First-gen American and college student, low-income, parents do not speak English, took charge of family responsibilities at a young age, dedication toward helping fellow transfer students, desire to promote mental wellness

Extracurriculars: Founder and president of Investment Club, council rep of Inter-Club Council, peer advisor, DECA alumnus and mentor, working on mobile app to assist transfer students at my school with planning/tracking coursework and major prereqs, a couple of academic honors, commitments toward exercise/working out and meditation
Work Experience: Marketing coordinator at college consulting company, remote marketing intern for marketing firm, Airbnb host, exam proctor at test prep company
Volunteer/Community service: Dedicated volunteer at local homeless shelter
Educational Prep Programs: UCB TAP, Berkeley Summer Experience, Envision Haas
Personal Statement: Can honestly say that I’m satisfied with the results, repeatedly met with TAP mentor to improve responses, had plenty of qualified individuals (including undergrad admissions director of UCB) review essays and offer feedback
— Experience with meditation and how it benefited my day-to-day life and overall mental health
— How my parents’ sacrifices motivated me to overcome academic adversity
— Passion for assisting students in community college

Strengths: GPA, major-related work experience, strong extracurricular activities, spent countless hours on PIQs
Weaknesses: Withdrew from Calc II course (last major prereq) in Fall 2019 semester due to difficulties understanding professor (super heavy accent, tough grader too!) — only flaw on transcript, will retake in Spring 2020

Applying to: UCB, UCLA (Biz Econ), UCI, UCSB (TAG for Econ), maybe Stanford and Santa Clara

I’m sure all of us have worked incredibly hard up to this point, so let’s all give ourselves a pat on the back  As someone who didn’t apply to any UCs out of high school (poor stats and fear of rejection), it still feels surreal to me that I might actually have a chance of getting into my dream school now. Anyways, I wish the best of luck to my fellow applicants on your supplemental essays and interviews!

Glad to see that the Haas thread has finally gone up. With the UC application out of the way, now all we got to worry about is the supplemental coming up in January!

[ *] Intended Major: Business Admin
[ *] GPA: 4.0
→ IGETC & Breadth will both be complete by Spring 2020
[ *] Extracurriculars: Marketing internship, 2019 summer intern for a solar panel company, library volunteer, Statistics SI Leader at CC & presented at an Annual SI Regional Conference.

[ *] Personal Statement:

  1. Required transfer prompt of course.
  2. Every person has a creative side, and it can be expressed in many ways… Describe how you express your creative side.
  3. Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?
  4. What have you done to make your school or your community a better place?
  5. Also talked about my unusual circumstances in the additional comments section.

[ *] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[ *] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[ *] School Type: CCC
[ *] Demographics: M/21/Asian

[ *] Strengths/weaknesses: Coming straight out of high school, I attended university abroad and did fairly poor; I ended up dropping out of school. In my essays, I framed my study abroad as a growing experience and where I found my passions.

Also applying to: UCLA, UCI, UCR (TAG), Cal Poly SLO, Cal Poly Pomona

Wow everyone has impressive experiences. Good luck on your finals!

hey guys has anyone received the haas supplemental essay yet? its suppose to come out early January and its due January 31st

Hi everyone, so am I the only one that has been refreshing my UCB transfer portal to see if the haas supplemental has been linked? Also I wanted to know if anyone’s been able to find information regarding our additional essay question.

I just received the Haas Supplemental, looks like they’re using last year’s question for us to answer.

Haas Essay Question: Provide us with a specific example of how you helped to foster an environment where differences are valued, encouraged and supported. Describe the situation and the role you played. If appropriate, describe any outcomes.

Be sure to fill out all the supplemental information and the TAU specifically for Berkeley, and to save your work everyone! Goodluck!

Thanks for the update. Don’t forget: the Haas supplemental application webinar is on the 15th if anyone would like to participate in the Q&A session. Good luck!

How important is the Statistics requirement? It’s the only one I haven’t met - I thought AP Statistics met it but I guess I messed up. I’m already taking 19 units this semester (including Calc II and physics) and would need to get a unit overload approval to enroll in statistics. I saw that it isn’t “required” on the Self Reported Academic Record form as it’s the only one that doesn’t have a red asterisk* next to it, but I’m not sure if that means anything.

It’s required for Haas. If not completed, I would check Haas off the list.

FYI, TAU is not tracking major requirements. It’s not red-lined because it’s saying you fulfilled the stats gen ed requirement. A different animal.

Intended Major: Business Administration

GPA: 3.897 Overall, 3.78 Major (B in calc 2), Finished 75 units in 14 months (so exceptionally heavy course load);

  • did IGETC, major requirements, 7 Breadth requirements, American Institutional requirements, and American Cultural requirements by Summer of 2019

Extracurriculars (place leadership positions in parenthesis): Business and Econ Student Association (long term member/climbed to presidency and had major impact), Managed a small business, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (Treasurer)

Job/Work Experience: Business tutor for a semester (current), Part time security guard on my first year to support my family

Volunteer/Community service: Co-Founded a free recycling organization to recycle for small businesses around the area

Personal Statement:
Personal Insight questions: 7/10 (no counselors but worked on them hard)
Supplemental question: 9/10 (really proud of this essay - it hits all 4 defining principles)

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes -
State (if domestic applicant): CA
School Type: CCC
Ethnicity: Iranian
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Lowest
Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): I came to the U.S. 3 years ago having self taught english using American TV-shows from a really low income family

Strengths: My course load on my first year / my impact on the Extracurriculars / my background / my Supplemental app
Weaknesses: PIQs / low course load on my second year / 3 Ws on non-relevant courses in Fall 2019
Applying to what schools? UCB, UCLA, UCSB, UC Irvine (TAG), NYU, Columbia

Hi all, it seems Haas has sent out emails for video interviews today. Please stay on the look out and check your spam in case you received one. Best of luck!
