I was looking at my financial aid package and I saw that housing is almost $15,000. This is just for housing, food and supplies are separate. Is all housing at UCB this expensive? If it is what are some cheaper alternatives?

Considering that UC Berkeley has the second highest dorm pricing of all colleges in the United States, public or private, this shouldn’t be a surprise.

Dorms cost between $1200/mo (for a Unit 3 triple) and $1700/mo (for a Foothill double). Financial aid allocates you enough money for 9mo.

Cheaper alternatives include private dorms, which are off-campus housing that provide a dorm-like environment. Those cost ~$1000/mo for a double.

The cheapest option is to live off-campus, where you can get a single room for ~$800/mo, or have a roommate and pay ~$500/mo. This is one of the reasons why I immediately moved out of the dorms after freshman year.

Oh yeah, you’re free to live on the streets if you wish. There are showers in the RSF and membership is only $10.

wait…does berkeley cover for this cost, because berkeley financial aid awards me 22k…and i basically have to pay 9k, so am i covered…?

I got the same amount
