I'm majoring in physics which has a lot of pre-reqs. Unfortunately my counselor royally screwed me over, and now by the end of Spring I'll still have to take the last class in the physics series. Can I take this over summer? Or should I just switch my major to math in which I have already completed the pre-reqs?

AFAIK UCB doesn’t count any classes taken during the summer right before the fall you plan on transferring in on. Don’t even look at summer… again AFAIK.

And look into if the physics department has any policy in place that forbids people changing their majors once you’re in. Maybe you can apply as math then simply change majors once you’re in.

Change your major!!! You can switch it when you get there easily. It could be the difference between getting in or not

Thanks for the help guys.

Really? I might just do that then. Kind of sucks that all the chem and physics classes I took will go to waste though. Ill probably continue taking the physics classes, and just apply as a physics major to the OOS schools Im targeting.

^^tseliottt. Try to find and register to a community college that offer winter-classes so you can do it there!

Do you mean that if I were to take a class this summer before entering, say, Berkeley the class wouldn’t count? Like, if I’m applying as a philosophy major, but plan on changing to an English major, would taking an English pre-req this summer be a fruitless endeavor?

thanks.

Just for the record, you are allowed to take “NON-REQUIRED” pre-reqs during the Summer before enrollment. You just let them know it’s a planned course. I did this for Linear Alg/Diff Eqs which I needed for my major. Though, they will not admit you if you needed to take a “REQUIRED” pre-req during the Summer.

Ex. Bio transfer admission requires a year of bio but only recommends completing the year of physics before transfer. Therefore you would need to complete bio by the end of Spring, but you would be able to take physics over the Summer or after you transfer.

Luckily, the Cal Physics department in particular suggests you complete as many pre-reqs as possible but doesn’t make them all mandatory for admission (like many other depts to). But if you finished them all, would you be a better candidate for admission? Probably.

My friend transferred as a Physics major this semester and we had only taken 7A and 7C. He had all of his other pre-reqs completed except for 7B and was accepted. He’s taking 7B now. It’s a case by case basis but you could be safer applying to L&S as a math major. It is ridiculously easy to switch majors since you’re not declared when you arrive anyway. Overall, it’s up to you and if you are accepted, you can still take Physics at your CC this Summer before you begin Fall classes.
