UCB Regent Interview

it is abnormal if the professor focuses on answering MY questions instead of asking me anything? and he takes his time answering my questions too. anyone have any idea why that is?

no need to stress about it. what is done is done. plus half of the invitees will get the scholarship- which is a really higher perctange

It's funny how i can sort of recognize a few people here because we met today. let's keep our online identities to ourselves

What I meant is "I like you very much and I will write a very good review of you" or simply "you got the scholarship."

Seriously, my prof spent more time answering my questions too. You're not the only one, DeantheMachn. Man I just hope to get it 'cause I just made up my mind to matriculate at UCB.

i think some icecream will do us all some good. off i go!

My professor told me that it's very likely that I would get it because it seemed like I needed it!! And he also said that he would like to apply a fellowship at his lab for me if I decided to go to UCB : D

wait, so are you saying that people who need more money have a greater chance of getting it? doesn't seem to make sense. can you explain that, cawaiigirl?

I think it all depends on how your interviewer looks at it. They know your family income so I guess if you are super poor they probably would take that into consideration? btw, if the interview is really the only thing they look at after accepting 1000 people for this candidacy, then I guess the interviewer has a very big effect on the final decision. Which means, if the interviewer thinks that you needs the scholarship more than other students and you are comparatively good too, then they probably would just give the scholarship to you?

icic. thank you for the response.

noooooooooooooooo

My financial need isn't that great but I really want the scholarship...

Not cool... =(

I talked to a lot of Cal students (ones that were talking to us before interview) and many of them didn't have any financial need (so they receive $1000/year for the scholarship) so just relax...it will be fine!

yah i was pretty sure many people i met there did not have financial need.

I thought UCB regents scholarship worth a lot more than $1000/year. Should stick with my UCI's Chancellor scholarship ($8150/year = Free in-state tuition & fees) and Campuswide Honors Program?

yah im thinking about sticking with UCI's regents (9k) + CHP
or at least wait for UCLA regents decisions

i dont think that financial need has anything to do w/ likeliness of getting scholarships. however, they do take into consideration any obstacles you may have faced if you have great financial need (i.e., first generation college student). my friend and i both interviewed for it and the professor really liked us and told us directly that we have a high probability of getting the scholarship. i have great financial need whereas my friend does not have any financial need.

hm.. anybody know when the official decisions for the scholarship will come out?

Regents decision come out on the day the UCB decision letters come out. I think the interview is more to sell you on going to Cal because I had the ****tiest interview ever and I still got UCB Regents.

As some other people at OHP and the interview said, their interviewers tried to downplay the importance of the scholarship and explaining how it is really up to the honors and scholarships committee. The interview holds importance, but it is only one factor of many that the committee uses to determine the recipients of the scholarship. Also, I would think that the committee would try to use some equalizing to remove any bias in the evaluations written by an interviewer; if one interviewer gave a C average to all the interviewed students and another gave an A average, it is probable that one interviewer just evaluates more strictly than the other, which would probably be taken into account.

If the above is true, then that explains why people with great interviews didn't get it and why even if you "had the ****tiest interview ever" you may have just as good of a chance.

That being said, do the scholarship decisions come with the acceptance letter, or are they posted on the 29th on the site as well? I know that UCLA is posting everything on the 30th, but I thought that Berkeley had two waves of notifications.

well like the professor said in my interview, they scratch almost a 1/3 of the people off the back even though they give the interview. another 1/3 are like automatic so the interview (whether s h i t t y or good) you'll get it. finally the middle 1/3 have it tough cause their interview matters a lot.

The current Scholar at the table we were sitting at said that if you are receiving a scholarship, it will say so when you log in to your admissions decision. I wonder though if that will still apply this year, as there was a vague statement somewhere (can't remember exactly where) on the web site or in the written materials that candidates would be notified before they needed to submit the SIR (May 1).
