I'm 19 years old, have a part-time job and got accepted for the SPRING term at UC Berkeley. There seems to be very little information regarding what they expect a transfer student to do in the semester between classes so I thought I'd ask here. Basically, what do they expect you to do as a transfer student? I'm not going to be able to find a job that's worth my time (40 hours a week, etc.) since I didn't complete my AA and just my transfer-necessary courses.

Should I attend UCLA (to which I was also admitted) for one semester? Should I just go to UCLA instead of Berkeley? Should I appeal to get in for Fall stating that I would literally be sitting on my hands for a semester? If I do go to Berkeley in the Spring without attending a different 4-year in the Fall, how likely is it that I graduate in a year and a half? How is housing, making friends, etc. for transfer students in the Spring? Any other information you guys can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Additional information:
-Berkeley would be my first choice undoubtedly had I gotten in for Fall.
-I live 20 minutes North of LA
-3.90 GPA with 74 units completed after this semester

! lipper: I chose UCB spring over UCLA fall + my gf there :p. Honestly, there are so many things you can do in the fall. First, though, I wouldn’t recommend appealing. I tried and so did a lot of others; it just doesn’t really work unless you have a financial reason as to why you NEED to go in the fall.

Your options:

Take UCB Extension. You can apply through Extension and take up to 10 units (I think), and take normal UCB classes.

You can get a job, but you said that isn’t realistic.

You can attend UCLA for fall quarter and then UCB for spring quarter. I have a friend here that did that.

As for housing and making friends, it’s all great! I live in the transfer apartments, everyone is really nice/chill/close-knit. We take trips to SF together on occasion, small parties, things like that. I’m also in a fraternity, so I have a social life there as well. We don’t haze, though, which is nice.

Btw I was 19 when I was admitted too :). Maybe that’s why we were spring admits haha.

Hope to see you at Cal!! This school is phenomenal…truly one of a kind.

@ lipper: Yes, you can. Since you’re doing Extension, you’re registering through like a backdoor, but you’re still a student on-campus like everything else. It costs $1,000 to register through extension, and then you just add on courses (fees are whatever the class costs i.e. 3 units worth of tuition for a class).

So if you were taking say 10 units, you would pay for those same 10 units like everyone else + a $1,000 Extension entry fee.

Since I live in LA would that be extremely inconvenient to use the extension over UCLA or equivalent? Would it be wise to move up there to take courses? Is housing offered in any way for students that are in extension but will be attending UCB the following semester, etc?
Thanks again.

All great questions. I would recommend doing a quarter at UCLA or CCC…it’ll be closer to your home and probably cheaper too. The Extension is nice, but it’s a hassle to get on-campus housing through Extension…possible, but hard.

Considering that you live in Socal, I would say do something else for a semester instead of Extension.
