What are some benefits of being a member of UC Berkeleys TAP program? I hope to transfer as a Computer Science major.
@briank82 and @MikeSauce are both familiar with it.
From my memory, you get essay help, your application reviewed, and something like an 80% admissions rate.
@luckie1367, it’s very interesting because Berkeley TAP says it does not offer priority (as does UCLA’s TAP), and only offers help and guidance – and yet – close to 80% admission rate and I’ve heard, more than once, if you’re Berkeley TAP you should note it in your essay.
Hmmmm.
One of the biggest benefits, @JavaStudent23, is having someone on “the inside” that knows how everything best be done on the application, what the adcoms are looking for in essays, etc.
They claim to have an 80% success rate, but that an extremely competitive major will still be an extremely competitive major.
I believe they also offer some Summer Enrichment Program, aka opportunities to take a class during the summer or research opportunity or something like that.
I’ve been in it officially about two months. I meet with my TAP advisor when she comes to my campus and we just chat and I just let her know what’s going on. Since I don’t apply until next fall, there really isn’t a ton going on with her and I as I’m basically just working to finish out my final classes, get A’s, and be involved.
They really just tell you what classes you need to take. I think that’s the main difference as I knew from day 1 exactly what classes to take and had all prereqs and breadth requirements for graduation done by the time I applied.
So many people get disqualified from not taking the right classes that just taking the right classes seems like it can explain the 80% acceptance rate.
Okay. I just did the numbers. Since about 2/3 of people are disqualified for Haas, we’ll just assume there is a similar disqualification rate for all majors. With a general acceptance rate of 23-25% for all transfer applicants, that means that the 1/3 who are qualified have around a 75% acceptance rate.
Just taking the right classes puts you that far ahead.
Thanks guys!
@spenceyboi I’m glad you brought that up because I’ve been saying that for a year. The actual admit stats are higher for almost every major because they factor in the ineligible ppl. I’m wondering why Haas is upfront about it, since most aren’t. The NYT had an article a few months ago about this, saying admit stats are artificially deflated (by including ineligible applicants) across the board nationally (except for a meager few that are upfront like Haas) to appear more selective and hence get onto the ranking systems. The multi-application trend also feeds in to this.
Although I do think haas is particularly brutal compared to other majors - but maybe not engineering, Econ, etc.
Does this apply to my major since its in the L&S and I need to a 3.0 after I get accepted to declare my major?
