UCB transfer questions

I was checking assist to decide which classes I needed to register for in the fall and i came up with a few problems that my counselor wasn't able to fully answer. I'm going to try calling up some UCs tomorrow to ask but I kind of thought maybe someone here could answer them a bit faster.

First off, I was checking UCB's requirements for the Asian Studies major and it said

"Junior level transfer students applying to the major must have completed at
least one year of a relevant Asian language. Languages include 1) Mandarin
Chinese, 2) Japanese. In addition, students must take both AsianSt 10A
(Introduction to Traditional Asian Cultures) and AsianSt 10B (Introduction to
Modern Asian Cultures)"

Neither of the last two classes is offered by my college or any college near where I live and my college doesn't even have a course in asian history. Since there are no prereqs for either class at Cal would it be alright if I took them both there my first semester or do I absolutely have to have them completed to even transfer?

Second, for the language requirement, it lists Elementary Chinese and Elementary Japanese 1AB as fulfilling the 1 year of a relevant language part. If I take something higher than that (like a year of Intermediate or Advanced Chinese/Japanese) would that be okay or do I need to have those basic classes? I know it would be an easy A, but i don't really want to spend my time learning how to say dog and cat...the same goes for the straight Japanese or Chinese language majors; I can't figure out if it's alright if I don't start at the bottom. Would it look bad if I didn't take every single course listed on assist because instead of intro I started with say Jap2 and ended up at Jap3 or should I just go for Jap1 -> Jap2/3? i.e do they really care that I didn't take Beginner's Chinese if I passed the harder classes by the time I send in my app?

Third, as my major requires very little in the way of math or science intensive study, would simply completing the IGETC reqs in those two areas be alright, or should I be going crazy trying to make my application look as good as possible? A year of Calculus should be all i need for transfer right?

And finally (sorry sorry for the long questions...), what other classes should I be taking besides the obvious IGETC reqs like English and the assist stuff like foreign language that make sense for my intended major (I basically just want to go abroad and study asian cultures...maybe become an archaelogist; that would be pretty fun) Anthropology?

Thanks in advance for answering any of my questions =D

1) That is a question only Cal can answer for you with any authority.

2) The language requirement is a measurement they use to show fluency or proficiency in a given language. If you can prove that you are taking the advanced classes because you are capable of it, there's no reason to think they wouldn't accept that.

3) IGETC only requires one class in math, so I imagine a year of Calculus is more than enough. You should do what you need to make your transcript appealing, but the best ways to do this are simple: 1) Complete the IGETC/TAP; 2) Have a high GPA; 3) complete your major pre-reqs.

4) Take what looks good to you. That is what college is for. :)

i looked over UCB ECON and there is the same situation, they have classes which are only offered there. Basiclly what they are saying is that as a junior level transfer you wont be accepted into the major until you completel asianst10b and 10a.

I pretty much gurantee you those classes arent offered at 90% of the commmunity colleges.

checking my college now to verify

yep .. "no course .."

So basiclly you will get in but not into the major until you do those courses.
