I am currently a student at a CCC (Orange Coast College) and and had a quick question about the strongly recommended courses. If I stay on track with my current plan, I will have the english, math, physics, natural science course, and 2 social/behavioral science courses (for UC requirement). As far as recommended classes goes I will only be able to complete COMPSCI 61B as my school, or any other school near me for that matter, does not have any of the other classes articulated for the other recommended classes. If I continue to do well in these courses (4.0 GPA currently) will I be a strong candidate for the EECS program? Also, how negatively will the lack of recommended courses affect my chances? Thanks in advance.
@cberg97 My husband’s in the same boat but for MechEng. When he went to tour ucb and spoke with a rep they said that the recommended classes hes unable to take won’t count against him since they are not offered at his ccc or nearby, BUT that a candidate that does have them completed will stand a better chance. Although, I have heard that there aren’t many ccc’s that offer all of the recommended courses for engineering majors. So I think that helps our cases and I think you’d have a good shot. My husband went to his ccc for 2.5 years so he went ahead and is completing his IGETC this spring, which I know isn’t required of engineering transfers, but hoping it helps a bit. Did you apply for Fall 2016?
yeah my husband’s case is different. He started taking general Ed classes, that filled IGETC requirements, that first half year he went to a ccc. He was going to try going for something else but once he got back into the chem and calc classes, basically his desire for ME was reawakened lol. So that’s why it will be completed when he transfers.
IGETC is not useful for UCB CoE, although some H/SS courses taken for IGETC can fulfill the lower division part of the H/SS requirement. UCB CoE requires two upper division H/SS courses to graduate.
I’m aware that ucb does not recognize the IGETC for engineering majors, but at least the majority of his general ed will be covered. @cberg97 that sounds like a good plan. Best of luck!
