UCB Transfer – What are my chances?

You can read my full story here - http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/graduate-school/742904-help-plan-my-three-year-road-csu-top-engineering-grad-school.html

Here's the short version:

By time of transferring

Applying to UCB EECS Undergraduate Program from CSUEB
3.5 (after Fall) or 3.6 cumulative GPA (Right before transferring)
4.0 Major GPA (I will make sure of that!)
Senior Transfer according to units completed (more than 100 Semester units)
Major Prerequisites will be partially done after Fall, and fully done after Spring before Transferring

Best Buy – Half a year as Sales Associate

High School Extracurricular Activities -

Yearbook – Two separate years as Assistant Editor-in-Chief and Technology Coordinator

My vast amount of units is because I was studying English for three years. But now, I am focused on Electrical Engineering (also in honor of my father's choice of career). The few poor grades which lower my GPA is in Upper Division English, so I'm counting on the admission committee to understand that.

I transferred to CSUEB from another State college only a month or two ago. Reasons include that it was too late to transfer to UC at the time and I don't have the major prerequisites done anyways.

I will be the first to go to UC, second to go to college, with one of my brothers dropping out of high school. Family income used to be low, but is now low-medium. I have lived in the same city in the bay area my whole life.

My Personal Statements WILL be the deciding factor, as it will explain my switch in major and my change in work ethic and how I see life.It will be clear that I had no passion in my career until recently.

It might be a small chance, but it's there, and I'm going to apply to Berkeley in four months when the application comes out. I will spend the time crafting my personal statements and trying to get one more extracurricular activity in.

So how do you feel about my chances, and what else can I do to increase them?

anime club…? they have that?

Ah, the anime club at my previous college is an interesting one. At the time, it was pretty much going to disappear, but I came in at the last moment and gave the organization a full renovation through fund-raising and publicity stunts. Now, it lives on. I definitely prove my leadership abilities through that club alone.

They even have one at UCB and many other top colleges as well. It’s an interest shared by all walks of life.

…unfortunately.

I also received Three Athletic Awards for Outstanding participation and sportsmanship, along with one NCS Scholar Athlete award for my high school wrestling.

I also received honor roll awards through High School (though isn’t that standard of UCB applicants?).

Should these be put onto my application as well? I’m thinking that the worse that could happen is it wouldn’t help.

Another HS EC I could add is being on the dance team for senior spirit week, though now it feels like I’m grabbing for anything.

And to heh - I understand your distaste. Anime fans can be quite…odd. But there is something to be said for the cream of the crop of anime in their stories and presentation.

Now, lets get back on topic track. :)

edit:UC Berkeley’s college of engineering accepts very few transfers over 89 units. “If you’ve applied to the College of Engineering, Chemistry, Environmental Design, Natural Resources or Haas School of Business, your application will be reviewed and there may be a slight chance of admission with excess transferable units.”

Your gpa is far below the average and that is definitely going to hurt you. Also, you will have very low priority because you will be coming out of a CSU and with senior standing. It won’t hurt to apply but i wouldn’t count on it. Why not go for UCSD instead? I think that’d be much more realistic.

You’re right JetForcegeminix. That adds more importance to my Personal Statement to get over the hurdle. Much of my units are from English courses, which don’t have to be transferred over since it has nothing to do with my major.

the EECS program at UCB is also very competitive to get in compared to other departments.

If we were to see this as just a numbers game, I won’t win. But by explaining my story, I have that slither of a chance.

You can’t pick and choose which classes to not transfer over. Anything that the admission officers deem UC transferable will be added to your unit count. If you can get a 4.0 in your major pre reqs for sure i’m sure you can attend a UC for grad school in engineering.

Ah, sorry for my wording. Whether the courses transfer or not doesn’t matter to me, since I would be given a fresh new start on GPA, but I’m hoping that I won’t be automatically rejected without explaining myself through my personal statements.

I am only applying to UCB because of location. Moving is out of the question. My parents are growing old and I’d like to be there for them in times of strife. Also, moving would cause serious financial burden.

Thank you so far Jetforce for your opinion. I fully know well my very small chances of being admitted.
