Special Circumstances: single parent, low income

Prospective Major: Electrical Engineering

What are my chances at UCB, UCLA, and UCSD? Any feedback? :)

aznballerlee:

UCB: Slight Reach (Engineering)
UCLA: Slight Reach (Engineering)
UCSD: Match

why are ucla and ucb slight reaches?

what do i need to improve on?

What's the breakdown of your SATI? Also, figure out your UC GPA (see UC pathways if you don't know the formula), which is just 10 & 11.

My UC GPA (a-g) is 4.29

My SATI breakdown: Verbal 470
Math 700
Writing 680

ouch 470 in verbal

Berkeley's engineering is a lot harder to get into than UCLA's, even though the L&S selectivities are similar.

UCLA will be a slight reach, and Cal will be a reach.

UCSD would be a match/safety.

UCSD:Match(Safety if you improve SAT1 score)

what would i have to increase my SAT 1 score by to get into UCB and UCLA?

I'm a bit stumped. The 490 verbal is going to be an issue as even an engineering major needs to write many papers. But 700 is also low for math as an engineering major. I think you're looking at lower UCs without a 740 math and minimum 600 CR.

Aznballerlee:

To get into UCB or UCLA you would probably have to get a really competitive SAT score. Although the rest of your credentials stand well. First of all, it should be clear that UCB's Engineering school is one of the best in US. Now, your Verbal (critical reading on the new SAT i'm assuming) should be slightly higher...ok. To get into UCB, it should be quite higher, maybe around the 700's.

Here's the breakdown to get into UCLA (not as competitive as UCB):

SAT I : 2100
CR: 700
Math: 700
Writing: 700

For UCB:

SAT I: 2250 (a great SAT score)

CR: 730-800
Math: 750-800
Writing: 720-800

Yeah UCB is probably a reach...but if you get the above Sat Scores, you could easily get into the corresponding school (First SAT scores to UCLA, second SAT scores to UCB)

Ok. I hope that helps
