Let’s say I have a UC capped gpa of 4.19 (counting sophomore, junior, first semester senior, and using a max of 8 honors/ap), and I took 4 semesters of honors courses, and 12 semesters of AP courses.
In freshman year I took 7 classes, and one of them was an honors class. I got Bs in literature and bio both semesters.
In sophomore year I took 6 classes, two were honors and two were AP. I got straight As.
In junior year I took 5 classes, two were AP. I got Bs in the AP classes first semester, and straight As second semester.
In senior year I took 5 classes, four were AP. I got a B in AP lit.
ACT: 35 first try.
AP exams (all 5s): chinese, comp sci, calculus bc, physics 1, physics 2, physics c mech, physics c electricity, music theory.
SAT Subject (all 800s): Math 2, physics (second try)
I am Asian, and in the top 30% of my school for GPA.
The Bs I got in freshman year were because I didn’t understand the importance of high school, and the Bs in first semester junior year were because of personal life problems. I don’t think this matters though.
If these are my stats, what are my chances for UCB and UCLA? I’m majoring in computer science related fields.
What about my chances for other UCS? Do you need any more information?
Capped GPA is used to calculate ELC and eligibility. What’s your uncapped GPA?
it is no good to be in only 30% of your class. But you only had 6 Bs total?
The good thing is that only 2 of those Bs were in 10/11 grades.
UCLA/UCB - low reach to high match (impacted major)
@goldenbear2020 My weighted uncapped UC GPA is 4.4 I believe
@uclaparent9 I misinterpreted our statistics, I’m actually top 20%. That still isn’t very good though.
I’m sorry, but what exactly does low reach to high match mean? Also what’s impacted major?
I had 7 Bs total, 4 Freshman year, 0 sophomore year, 2 junior year, 1 senior year
Computer Science is one of the toughest majors to get in (impacted!). I put your chances at 25% to be admitted to each one of the two schools!
I think you have 50% chance for each one of the mid tiered UCs (UCSB, UCD,UCI) and perhaps 35 to UCSD (I hate to give percentage chances but did it because you were not familiar with the reach/match/safety terminology).
With a 4.4 UC GPA, you should get into Berkeley for L&S CS (same selectivity as rest of L&S), but not for EECS (avg GPA of 4.6-4.7). Keep in mind that entering L&S CS majors need to pass a set of intro math/CS courses with a 3.3 GPA to declare the CS major.
Similarly, you should get into UCLA L&S but CS will be a reach.
@uclaparent9
It seems like I might not get into any decent UCs. Does my class ranking really matter that much? My school is really competitive.
@goldenbear2020
What is a L&S CS major? Does “should get into” mean I have a really high chance of getting in?
If I get in for a L&S major, can I change my major?
You are saying you want to attend super competitive colleges. ucla had 99,000 applicants.
What is the best indicator of your success in college?
How you ranked in a competitive high school.
@ClarinetDad16 Good point.
I have the option of transferring to a different school right now, where I would be top 1%. It’s not very competitive.
Would this dramatically increase my chances of admission?
Being Asian and having a 4.4 GPA is not too good for your chances. Your high AP and ACT scores make it sort of seem like you are intelligent but don’t care much for your grades. But, the fact that your grades improved after your first two years could make up for a lot. If you had better grades and some good extra curriculars, I’d say you would be a shoo-in, but since your GPA is a bit low, UCLA and Berkeley would be reach schools. Good luck!!
@rollarkid it will help but they will know that’s not a competitive school and you were only there a short time
Hi all,
I really want to get into UC Berkeley(first priority) or UCLA (second priority) with CS as my major.

650 Critical Reading
770 Math
780 Writing
2200 Composite
SAT Math II:
800
SAT Physics:

FBLA E-Business 7th place at national level competition (Coding a website).
FBLA Mobile App Development 5th place at national level competition (Coding a mobile app).

What are my chances?
Also, I’m a bit worried about my SAT score. Will it be fine?
By the way, I am a California resident.
