UCB vs UCLA

What do kids go to UCB over UCLA for and what do kids go to UCLA over UCB for, both reasons and areas of study.

or does ucla only exist for kids that dont get in UCB?

berkeley over la: more prestigious, better programs, norcal/sf, liberal, drugs, reputation, more top programs
la over berkeley: more laid back, socal/LA, sports, safer/nicer community, more well-rounded, better looking people (allegedly)

Just go to LA if you live in NorCal and Cal if you live in SoCal.

^^ lol I was thinking that too...

AzNChoiBoi8: Actually, Berkeley's renowned for being so eclectic -- more than most universities (even UCLA).

i think it all depends on the attitude and lifestyle you have and want to be surrounded by

they choose which campus they like better. Some kids hate Telegraph Avenue, but others think it cool. Some kids hate that UCLA is sooo Angeleno. Visit and decide.

Cal better overall!!

In San Diego, students chose Berkeley overwhelmingly over UCLA, and hearing back from some friends in Fresno, more students chose UCLA over Cal, but it didn't resemble the supermajority I saw in San Diego.

Personally, i dont know why someone would choose LA over Berk. Berkeley has an international reputation second only to perhaps Harvard and Stanford, while LA is not as well regarded internationally or domestically. I mean, when I say you go to Berkeley, people automatically look up to you and think you're REALLY smart and i dont think it would be the same if i went to LA.

Not true,
UCLA (according to its own website :p) has the most recognized college logo in the world.

You can see it yourself:
<a href="http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/%5B/url%5D">http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/</a></p>

(click on "31 reasons" on the right side)

I honestly think for every reason you think Cal is better, you can find a reason why UCLA would be just as great if not better in another way, and vice versa.

I'd say they're "twin" sister institutions in two distinctly different regions of CA.

(Btw, my top choice for school next year is Cal)

Well I'd say UCLA is the most notable southern branch of University of California (aka Berkeley).

But seriously, 'twin' sister institutions? History scoffs at thee!

<a href="http://students.berkeley.edu/files/Admissions/Viewbook%2006.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://students.berkeley.edu/files/Admissions/Viewbook%2006.pdf</a></p>

drab: perahps it s/b renamed, University of California Southern Branch....oh, yeah, those initials are already taken. hahahaha

i live like 20min from berkeley and its my dream school so im really biased but i just loved it more than ucla. its more upen and liberal. ucla seemed really uptight and living in la might be weird. im a norcal girl though and dont ever want to move down south (i hate hot weather). go cal!!!!!!

p.s. my best friend is in LOVE with ucla the way i am with berkeley. at the end of the day its where you go and get that gut feeling that you could totally live here.

I love how the same thread in the UCLA forum died xD

Anyways, I think that Berkeley and LA, since they're virtually on the same level, are for different people. Berkeley is for people that are more competitive and more inclined towards academic success. LA is for people that are more rounded out, and somewhat more easy going. The Berkeley name is obviously more prominent in terms of academics, but I heard that the UCLA logo is like a brand name elsewhere in the world.

Peppers: If that's the way you see it...

Have you been to either campus yet?

When I was a kid and didn't know much about universities or thought that far, I've would hear from various people that all the smarty pants to go Berkeley... hehe. UCLA was never mentioned...

I'm from the Bay Area as well, perhaps that's why!

Yep. Attend UCLA is you're on NorCal and Vice Versa if you're in Socal. My take as a Cal student. I lived in NorCal and Cal was not special for me. You really do need to enjoy an exotic college atmosphere that just isnt too different.

I've visited UCLA and about 10 of my friends went to Berkeley last year. I remember Thanksgiving when one of the guys that went came back. He used to be really arrogant in high school and would always be the one depressing everyone else. All of a sudden, he was quiet and didn't have a smirk on his face, and the only thing he could say was "Just know, there's always gonna be someone better than you". That, and the girl from my school that dropped Berkeley for a year to go to CCC because she couldn't handle the pressure. Yeah, I don't respond well to that kind of competition ><
