What do kids go to UCB over UCLA for and what do kids go to UCLA over UCB for, both reasons and areas of study.

UCLA allllllllllllllllllllll the wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Kids go to Berkeley because it's prestigious. Kids go to UCLA if they realize that Berkeley's prestige comes at the price of cut throat competition. That, and the fact that UCLA is nestled in a comfortable bubble inside SoCal.

I agree with what what Absolut. said. Berkeley attracts a certain kind of student. UCLA draws a much more well rounded crowd (and also, from what I've seen, a higher percentage of hot girls).

probably UCLA better food i heard was WAY better and unless u wanna become some drunken idiot at berkeley go to UCLA =D

Berkeley's not really that liberal... I know my friend wants to go there for that reason, but all schools in general tend to have a liberal bias, and UCLA WAS the place that hired communists back in the '70s xP

With that being said, I think Berkeley really is the place where a lot of the nerds go. The preppy smart kids are the ones that end up at LA

yeah UCLA is far less nerdy than berkeley. its a good balance here. in between cal and usc in the social scale

UCB > UCLA : Prestige, Chemistry Department, Specific Engineering Depts
UCLA > UCB : More well-rounded experience, Bubble

Just go where you feel more comfortable...

What an unrepresentative image of Berkeley students by UCLA students. It's evident that UCLA students have no idea what the Berkeley experience is all about nor the students.

It's not possible to describe stereotype Berkeley students as a whole because there are ALL sorts of people here. Everyone seems to be able to find their own niche. That's one of the many things really what I like about Berkeley.

That may be true, but who produces more C.E.O's, doctors, and overall leaders? Cal does, not UCLA. UCLA, with all due respect, churns out sheep - a.k.a followers in the real world. Although both have a prestigious reputation, I would choose Cal over LA because it's not as cut-throat. If you go to the UCLA forum, there's a thread called " Regret choosing UCLA." At Cal, nothing like that exists. Students attend Cal for many different reasons, but from a holistic point of view UCLA has nothing compared to Berkeley (except maybe for food and aesthetics.

Cal Is Good For Some, Ucla Good For Others. And Neither For Many. It Depends Onwho You Are.

it depends if you like the letter B or letters L and A more : )

In response to underground, Cal too has its own "regret going to Cal" thread. People have talked about how they lost their humanity after going to Cal, numbed from the grade-whoring, lack of true friends, and overall very bitterly competitive student-body.

Not to say UCLA doesn't have some of these traits, but it goes both ways.

Underground, where are you getting that Cal is less cut throat than UCLA? In my opinion, and in the opinion of several of the people I know that went to Berkeley this year, Cal is much more cut throat. This, contrast to my friend's sister who went to UCLA saying that it's much less relaxed, and I have a perfect choice on where to go.

It all boils down to which campus you prefer better. Berkeley might churn out more CEOs and doctors, but that certainly doesn't apply to all, and UCLA can more likely than not equally compete with it's own set of prominent alumni. The schools are so closely ranked and so almost equally prestigious that a decision between the two will be between which environment you would prefer better, and your own character. Personally, I would rather not be competing so much with my fellow students, and as such I thought UCLA would be a better choice. If your character is much more assertive and aggressive, Berkeley might be a better choice for you.

I agree. Berkeley is not for everyone. You need to have a certain amount of aggressiveness and proactiveness to succeed-this is true for many things in life, but especially as a student attending Berkeley. If you are this type, then you will be able to seek out the vast amount of resouces available at Berkeley that many other universities could only dream of providing.

Go to Cal if: you want to be fighting for grades (especially premed) for all four years of your undergrad; if you like fighting for some BS cause and protesting like an idiot, but then realize then years down the line that it was naivette and idealism; or if you love pot.

Go to UCLA if: you still like fighting for grades (especially premed) but you realize that its usually fighting against yourself and not your peers (like at Cal); if you like the ideal socal weather; or if you're a guy (seriously the chicks are 100 times hotter in LA than in Berkeley, and if you don't believe me then visit both schools during the regular academic school year)

btw pepper, where'd you hear that Cal churns out more CEO's and doctors???? May be it has more noble leureates (sp?), but seriously who cares about them.

Both are situated in very good scrumptous food neighborhoods.

I heard it from some Cal defender oO;;

underground,

Talk to sakky if you really don't believe that people end up regretting going to Cal. I know at least a couple of people myself who regretting their decision to head up there.

I think that the fairly large number of CEOs, professors, and congressmen from UCLA would take issue with that statement.

unlimitedx,

You're smart enough to know that this is not a representative sample of what UCLA students think of Cal.

Everyone,

The difference between UCLA and Cal for the average undergrad in terms of resources is almost zero. Seriously. There is almost nothing that Cal has that UCLA doesn't that the average undergrad is going to even care about. And vice versa. What matters for undergrads is largely the environment and quality of teaching. On this, UCLA has no significant advantage over Cal. Cal also has no significant advantage over UCLA. Both are large research universities situated pretty much just outside of large cities. Both are part of the UC system, and offer students tons of fantastic (and underused) opportunities like EAP, UCDC, and undergrad research.

Seriously, Cal's reputation is incredible. But in the long-run, it doesn't matter. I chose UCLA over Cal years ago because I felt that Cal did not offer me the experience that UCLA would. I would do it again in a heartbeat. I don't believe that my education was in any way hurt by my decision.

By the way, as far as doctors and lawyers go, UCLA and Cal are pretty consistently similar in terms of numbers admitted to top schools.

This is why the decision is so hard for undergrad, I think. They're both awesome choices.
