UCB or UCLA. simple as that. should be fun to see where the responses on this thread lead to

my choice: UCB

really depends on your field and current location really.

If you live in Nor Cal why not stay close and go to Cal or if your from so cal go to UCLA

UCLA campus is in the best part of LA, Cal’s campus is in the ghettos

However both campus are nice.

The difference is so minor your lucky to get in either and should be happy with whichever.

On that note my pick: UCLA for not being in the ghettos and Westwood is soooo nice

I haven’t visited Berkeley, but these are my initial impressions. UCLA is more appealing from a social aspect (better parties probably, more attractive people, better weather), while Berkeley is more appealing from an academic prestige aspect. I get the impression that people at UCLA are happy, while people at Berkeley are stressed out. I plan to choose UCLA if admitted to both.

hereeeeeeeeeeee we go again.

Even though I was born and raised in the Bay, overall UCLA is more appealing to me.

@arcadefire1027 really!? I would think that the weather in Berk is far better than the weather in LA

@ixr LOLLL hell yeahh, u need to have a thread like this every year hahahahaha

i would definitely rather go to UCLA over Cal, but there’s no way i (business major) can choose ANY school over haas (besides wharton). i wish ucla would have a true business program…

Well I’m not entirely sure if UCB is in the ghettos or not, but if it is sign me up. Having completed almost 2 years there, I loved the culture and atmosphere. People on the street are noticeably friendlier than in southern california (having lived in SoCal most my life). The whether didn’t bother me, though I do prefer southern weather. In terms of the social aspect, UCB certainly offers all kinds of subculture, which I prefer, but the frat parties don’t end either, so pick your poison – I would expect more frat parties at UCLA, but less subculture. I would also expect a larger population of attractive people at UCLA, but, whatever, nice but not needed. Academically, I am simply biased by national rankings to see UCB as much preferable (depending on department of course), though not once while I was there did I think to myself, “hey, I’m receiving an exceptional top-notch education here”, however I also never felt underserved.

In short, in terms of academics and enviroment I would choose UCB. I may end up at UCLA simply due to location – it would be nice to keep paying no rent.

This is hard. Also, excuse the superfluous and probably incorrect use of parantheses.

I’d choose UCLA because: it’s close to home, it’s cheap, it’s close to my two favourite sports teams (Dodgers and Lakers), it’s in the second largest city in the United States, the weather is nice, the clubs/bars/concerts are great and a whole lot of other things that are simply L.A. exclusive.

I’d choose UC Berkeley because: it represents a huge change, it’s close to my best friend (kind of a weak reason, but he goes to grad school at SJSU and I miss him a lot), the atmosphere on campus is AMAZING (I’ve seriously never felt as much energy on a campus than I have at UCB), the academics are top-notch, it’s close to Oakland!!!, it’s close to San Francisco, Bay Area transit is done very well

I wouldn’t choose UCLA because: I’m getting tired of Los Angeles (at times I feel like I’d rather attend UMiami than UCLA), whenever I visit campus (which is often) I’m never WOWED or even satisfied (just meh), I actually prefer a more “ghetto” (or NorCal style “JANKY”) neighborhood, traffic going into Westwood omg***

I wouldn’t choose UC Berkeley because: IT’S COLD, I’d be the ******bag wearing Dodgers and Lakers jerseys to the games, I don’t really know the club/bar/concert scene too well, I wouldn’t have my car most likely, what if I have a falling out with my best friend, the side of my family I dislike the most lives in the Bay Area

I’d say it’s even, leaning towards Berkeley. I just hope I’m lucky enough to even be faced with this dilemma.

UCLA. I live too close to CAL, I want to go south and get away from home for college.

UCLA: Loved the vibe I got when I went down there to check it out in the summer. Even though I think it fits me to go to either school, I would much rather go to UCLA.

I would like to point that whereas it is true that the campuses differ wildly when it comes to things like location, culture, student body, etc. When it comes to academics, they are virtually the same. Perhaps Berkeley has a little more overall “prestige,” but really, in my opinion, the magnitude of the difference in academics is negligible in comparison to the magnitude of the other differences listed above.

For those who get the opportunity to choose between Cal and UCLA, I strongly recommend you look beyond academics and prestige as both universities are pretty much on the same level (though as I mentioned earlier, Cal is a bit more “prestigious”). Look more into the other factors; especially “fit.” Pick a place that you would be comfortable spending the next two years (or more) of your life.

Random side question. How would people rank Cal, UCLA, Brown, and Cornell? (Top two UCs vs Bottom two Ivies)

@Supa_Ramga

I would rank it as…
Brown >>> Cornell >= Berkeley >= UCLA

Brown > Berkeley > Cornell >= UCLA

Merced > everything else

@arcade
Interesting. Why do you find Brown much superior to the other three?

My personal ranking is as follows.
Brown > Cal > UCLA >= Cornell

I think they are all pretty close to each other, but in terms of “prestige/rankings” there is just barely enough to separate them.

I go to Cal, go to UCLA.

end.

brown is considered a ‘bottom’ ivy? thought it’d be dartmouth

I live in SoCal, and I am tired of living here. I live in the Inland Empire: it is filthy, the stench is horrendous, windy (dry), and the air quality is “deadly” (I live near farms)- I also just want a change of scenery.

Having visited both schools, I am rather impressed by both. I enjoy Cal’s weather, and its close vicinity to the city, the transportation system, and quite frankly the new environment, which inspires me. However, I am also really impressed with UCLA. In fact, I just recently went to their transfer day and was shocked on how beautiful (an understatement, in my opinion) the surrounding neighborhood is; not to mention the awesome architecture and landscaping of the UCLA’s campus, and how clean it is.

Despite both visits to each campus and thoroughly researching each institute, I am somewhat indifferent. But if I had to guess for the purpose of this thread, I probably would pick Cal for its traditions, reputation, new environment it poses for me, and because San Francisco > LA!!!

PS UCLA’s girls are hot, though not as much as USC’s! (irrelevant to the topic) :)

I would say: Cornell>Brown>Berkeley>UCLA.

I was not really sure where Brown fits in, but I think Cornell is definitely before Cal…

Even though Dartmouth is considered lowered, I would rather go there than cornell or brown.
